LEXINGTON, VA – The Shenandoah men's soccer team dropped a heartbreaking game to the Generals of Washington & Lee Saturday afternoon in the rain. The Hornets (3-2-2, 0-1-1) struck first and took a 1-0 lead into the half, but it would be the Generals (4-1-3, 2-0-0) that would score two late second-half goals, the second with eight seconds left in the game to secure the 2-1 win.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
W&L had the advantage in shots 24-11 and also the edge with shots on goal with 7-2.
W&L also had the edge on corner kicks, 7-4.
Travis Jett got the start and made five saves.
Nathan Yared led all Hornets with four shots.
Kyle Welch had three shots of his own.
Chinedu Ikem scored his third goal of the season, with Welch picking up his first assist on the goal.
HOW IT HAPPENED
On a wet and rainy Saturday afternoon, the Hornets would strike first in the 19
th minute with a goal from
Chinedu Ikem to give the Hornets the 1-0 lead. For the rest of the half, it would be the host Generals applying pressure, but the Hornets' backline and goalie,
Travis Jett were up to the challenge of preserving the 1-0 lead.
Immediately in the second half, the Generals would go on the attack once again with four shots and two corner kicks within the first five minutes of play. The Hornets, under pressure, would endure four more shots over the span of 10 minutes with Jett making two of his five saves in the game.
Then in the 89
th minute, the Generals would capitalize and get a ball in the back of the end as PJ Ryan would tie the game at 1. As the PA announcer was counting down the final ten seconds of the game, the Generals would score for a second time with eight seconds left on a goal from Nick Apostolou to give Washington and Lee the 2-1 victory, and hand the Hornets their first conference loss.
WHAT'S NEXT
The Hornets will return to Winchester Wednesday night for a non-conference matchup with Penn St. Harrisburg before returning to conference play next weekend against Ferrum.
