Hornets Clip Eagles Wings

Field Hockey wins fifth straight game

FREDERICKSBURG, VA – The Shenandoah field hockey team won their fifth straight game with a 1-0 victory over Mary Washington Friday evening, a game that was moved from Saturday due to weather.  The Hornets (6-1) got a goal in the 8th minute from Claudia Lenahan off of a pass from Gracie Wilkerson to secure the 1-0 win over the Eagles (5-3).

INSIDE THE NUMBERS

Mary Washington outshot Shenandoah 11-6 and had the edge on shots on goal 6-3 as well.
Gracie Wilkerson led all Hornets with two shots, one on the cage.
Goalie Taylor Swann, fresh off of her Player of the Week performance, made six saves in the effort to pick up her fourth shutout of the year.
Swann and the defense kept Mary Washington off the scoreboard, despite having to defend more penalty corners.

HOW IT HAPPENED

In a defensive battle for the majority of the first quarter, it would be the Hornets who go on the attack first.  Cassidy Morrison would fire a shot on goal, that the Eagle keeper would have to kick away.  That play would then lead to a penalty inside the circle, resulting in a penalty corner.  Madison Short would inbound the ball, and find Gracie Wilkerson who passed the ball to Claudia Lenahan for the only score of the game.  Mary Washington would earn one penalty corner and one shot in the rest of the period, but the defense stood tall preserving the lead.

In the second, Mary Washington fired 10 shots and earned four penalty corners, but the Hornet defense did a fantastic job preserving the lead.

In the third, the Hornets had a great chance to tack on an insurance goal, as Shenandoah earned a penalty shot, but the Eagle goalie came up with the save to keep the score to a one-goal deficit.  In the fourth, the Hornet defense stood their ground and did not give up a shot or scoring opportunity to hold on for the 1-0 win.

WHAT'S NEXT?

The Hornets have another touch match-up with St. Mary's College of Maryland on Wednesday afternoon in St. Mary's City, Md.  This will be the last tune-up for the Hornets before they start conference play next weekend.
