ST. MARY'S CITY, Md. – The No. 19 Shenandoah University field hockey was back in action Wednesday evening as they traveled to St. Mary's City, Md. for a non-conference, mid-week matchup with St. Mary's College (Md). The Hornets (7-1) would walk away with the 1-0 victory over the host Seahawks (4-3).
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Shenandoah had the edge in shots, five to three, with both teams putting one shot on cage.
Each team had six penalty corner opportunities.
Taylor Swann made one save and picked up her fourth straight shutout victory, and fifth overall for the season.
Cassidy Morrison scored the only goal of the afternoon, her first of the season, and led all players with two shots.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In the first period, Shenandoah had one opportunity to take an early lead, but
Cassidy Morrison's shot got blocked and never made it through to the cage. The host Seahawks earned two penalty corners over the course of the first 15 minutes but did not manage any shots on Swann.
Early in the second period, the Seahawks would have their best chance to crack the scoreless game when they would earn back-to-back penalty corners and then have a shot blocked by a Hornet defender, and finally with
Taylor Swann protecting the post and keep the ball from reaching the back of the cage. Shenandoah earned one penalty corner in the stanza, and both teams would enter the break tied at 0.
After the break, the Hornets would start to apply pressure on St. Mary's (Md), and after three penalty corners,
Cassidy Morrison would find the back of the cage for her first of the season. The Hornet defense did a fantastic job shutting down the Seahawks as they would only give up one shot over the course of the final 30 minutes.
UP NEXT
The Hornets will return to Aikens field and open ODAC Conference play on Saturday afternoon when the other Hornets come to town. Lynchburg is ranked No. 17, two spots ahead of Shenandoah in the latest coaches' field hockey poll. First draw is at 1 p.m.
