Volleyball Drops ODAC Home Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team fell 3-1 Friday night in a home ODAC contest versus Averett University.

The Hornets (5-7, 1-1 ODAC) scored first in two of the four sets against the Cougars (8-4, 2-0 ODAC), while winning the third set of the match.

RECAP
Shenandoah gained a kill from Aaliyah Chunn, on an assist from Abby Litchefels, to start the match. Averett would go on to get the next six points and hold the lead for the rest of the opener.

Down 15-8, SU cut the lead just three thanks to several AU errors and a pair of kills by sophomore Emma Thompson. Thompson and the Hornets went on a six-point run to cut the deficit to just one, but the Cougars denied the tying point and ended up winning the set 25-22.

The visitors would be the ones to strike first set two, never giving up the lead in the 25-19 set victory.

Shenandoah flipped the script in the third set in part to multiple kills from Brooke Gast, Jillian Warter and Thompson. Gast and Thompson picked up kills in an opening 3-0 run to begin the set.

In that set, six of the final eight points were scored by SU.

The Cougars would win the next set to take the match despite two lead changes and five ties, the most of any set.

Chunn and Gast each had six block assists while Chunn led the team with two solo blocks.

Litchenfels led all participants with 26 assists.
