WINCHESTER, VA – The Shenandoah women's soccer team opened up ODAC Conference play this morning against Guilford College. The Hornets (5-2-1, 0-1) would suffer a 1-0 defeat at the hand of the Quakers (6-0-1, 1-0) on a miserable, wet, and rainy day.
INSIDE THE NUMBERS
Shenandoah out shot the Quakers 16-4 and had the edge with shots on goal 2-1.
The Hornets also dominated in corners with 19 opportunities compared to Guilford's 4.
Lauren Duffy,
Chandler Gallant,
Kayla Jenkins, and
Peyton Lubinsky all had three shots in the contest. The Hornets' only two shots on frame came from Duffy and
Jenna Caple.
HOW IT HAPPENED
In a game where Shenandoah dominated possession from the start, the Hornets came out putting pressure on the Quaker defense from a shot by
Jenna Caple just over a minute into the game that Guilford's goalie was forced to save to keep the score level at 0.
Shenandoah's best scoring opportunity came in the 29
th minute off of a corner kick.
Emily Dendis sent the ball into the box,
Chandler Gallant was the first one to get a head on it, and then
Kayla Jenkins header, had the goalie beat, and clanked off of the post.
In the second half, Shenandoah started off on the attack right away again putting shots toward the keeper and earning corner kicks, but were not able to get anything past the keeper. After Guilford picked up a yellow card, the team rallied around their coach, stole the ball at midfield, put a through ball past the last defender, and then Lily Brown slotted a shot into the corner to give Guilford a 1-0.
The Hornets would spend the remaining 30 minutes of play continuing to pressure the Guilford back line, but unfortunately on this cold, rainy, day, the Hornets could not find the back of the net.
