Campbell Hits Go-Ahead Shot in Final Minute

LEXINGTON, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team knocked off No. 9/18 Washington and Lee, 65-64, in a road ODAC game on Wednesday night.

The Hornets (13-3, 8-1 ODAC) picked up a late go-ahead layup from Shawnise Campbell and forced a missed Generals' (15-2, 9-1) three to get SU's first-ever win against a ranked team.

RECAP

Shenandoah went up 6-2 in the first two minutes of the game with four points from Maddie Kimble. Kimble picked up a steal to begin the game and turned it into a made two-pointer from Terese Greene.

The Hornets took a 19-13 lead after one while holding the home team to 3-23 (13.04%) shooting across the first 10 minutes.

Washington and Lee pulled within two to start the second but layups from Gabby Krystofiak and Sydney Shepos put SU back up by six. Shenandoah took its largest lead of the first half thanks to a Greene three-pointer, putting them up 30-21 with just over two minutes remaining in the second quarter. Shepos ended the quarter for SU by hitting a turn-around shot in the paint, as SU held onto the nine-point advantage at the half.

Shenandoah started the third quarter on fire by getting an Emily Williams three, followed by a Krystofiak basket to take a lead of 14. That lead would be SU's largest of the game.

For the rest of the third, W&L chipped away at the SU lead, bringing it down to three at the end of the third. The Generals closed the half on an 18-7 run.

Washington and Lee took its first lead of the game, 47-46, with just over seven minutes left of play. As the teams traded leads, Kimble buried a three to put SU back up by two. The lead for Shenandoah was taken away again by the Generals, as W&L went up by three.

For the final five minutes, the two ODAC competitors traded leads five times.

W&L took its final lead with 23.6 seconds left on the clock with a big three-pointer, forcing SU to call a timeout.

With the ball in the Hornets' offensive half of the court, Greene drove into the paint and dished the ball to an open Campbell, who hit the eventual game-winning layup with 18.7 ticks left of the clock.

Shenandoah's defense then forced Washington and Lee to a missed shot in the final seconds as SU grabbed the rebound and secured the upset win.

Kimble led SU in points with 20 as Greene finished the game with 13. Shenandoah ended up with eight players picking up points.
