Women's Basketball Overcomes Double-Digit Deficit in Battle of ODAC Hornets

Campbell Finishes With Double-Double

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team overcame a halftime deficit in its 69-59 win over the University of Lynchburg at home in conference play on Saturday afternoon.

SU (14-3, 9-1 ODAC) trailed by 14 at the half before going on an 11-0 run to start the half in the game against LYN (10-8, 5-6).

RECAP

Lynchburg came in and took a 17-14 lead after one quarter. Shenandoah led 12-10 with 90 seconds left in the opening quarter but Lynchburg used four free throws and a three pointer to take the lead.

The visitors held the lead for the rest of the half and kept SU to just three made field goals in the second quarter. LYN made seven threes in the first 20 minutes, which helped them take the 14 point lead.

Shenandoah quickly came out and got a layup from Shawnise Campbell and knocked down its first three of the game, coming from Gabby Krystofiak. Another layup from Campbell, followed by a Maddie Kimble layup brought the came within three points with still half the third to go.

Lynchburg pushed its lead back to five points but Terese Grenne scored four of SU's next six points, helping them regain the lead for the first time since the opening quarter.

LYN once again got the lead and kept it till the end of the third quarter, this time only leading by two. However, SU had outscored them 24-12 in the third.

The teams started slow in the fourth quarter before Kimble nailed a three pointer to put SU back up, 56-54 with 7:08 remaining in the fourth.

From there on it was all Shenandoah, as they went on a 13-5 run for the remainder of the game. The SU defense held LYN to one made basket in the final seven minutes.

Campbell added the final touches to the SU win with a layup in the final minute. The layup gave her a double-double. The center finished with 10 points and 12 rebounds.

Including Campbell, all five SU starters scored at least eight points. Kimble finished with 11 points and Grenne led all players with 16. Kayla Maxson, coming off the bench, also scored eight points.

Shenandoah's defense held Lynchburg to 24.1% from the field in the second half.
