WINCHESTER, Va. – Shenandoah dropped a heart breaker to Randolph-Macon at home Wednesday evening in an overtime thriller 72-70. Reigning ODAC Player of the Week,
Terese Greene, led the Hornets with 25 points going 7-13 from the field, including 4-6 from deep and converting on 7-8 from the charity stripe en route to leading all scorers.
Maddie Kimble was the other Hornet who had double-digit points as the senior went 8-17 from the floor, 1-5 from three, and knocked down 4-6 opportunities from the free throw line to chip in with 21 points.
Maggie Rooklin was a spark plug off the bench going 3-5 from the floor including 2-3 from deep and had eight points and was the third leading scorer for the Hornets.
Macon jumped out to an early 2-0 lead but
Terese Greene buried her first triple to put the Hornets up 3-2 just over 60 seconds into the game.
Maddie Kimble rattled off back-to-back jumpers and the game was tied once again at seven, a theme throughout the entire game. As the first quarter was winding down, Randolph-Macon was holding at 15-9 lead, until
Gabby Krystofiak nailed a three to pull the Hornets back to within three points with just over 30 seconds to play.
Randolph-Macon jumped out to their biggest lead of the game at seven in the second, but a pair of free throws from
Terese Greene started the comeback. Greene hit a three with 5:51 left in the half, and the Hornets were only down three (21-18,) then after Macon committed a foul
Maggie Rooklin hit her first of two consecutive threes as the Hornets took a 24-23 lead with just over four minutes to go. A three from
Terese Greene and a
Zoe Star jumper, pushed the lead back in favor of the Hornets, 30-23. However, the Hornets got shut out the rest of the half, and Randolph-Macon tied the game at 30 heading into the break.
The Hornets started slowly in the third quarter as Macon took a 37-32 lead at the 6:05 mark of the period. An
Emily Williams jumper and another three-ball from Kimble tied the game at 37 before
Kayla Maxson split a pair of free throws to regain the lead for the Hornets.
Maddie Kimble hit another jumper with six seconds remaining in the third and the Hornets took a 45-41 lead heading into the fourth.
Randolph-Macon tied the game at 47 just over two minutes into the final stanza, but free throws from Kimble and Greene sandwiched between a made Yellow Jackets baskets put the Hornets up 51-49. Once again, Macon tied the game but
Terese Greene hit back-to-back jumpers and Shenandoah regained a four-point lead.
Kayla Maxson pushed the lead back to five with her jumper at the 4:10 mark.
Maddie Kimble's jumper with 1:24 left in regulation gave the Hornets a three-point lead until Juliana Park of Randolph-Macon hit a three to tie the game at 60 with 13 seconds left. The Hornets called a timeout to draw up, hopefully, the game-winning play.
Terese Greene missed the first shot, but
Sydney Shepos grabbed the offensive rebound and with the ball bouncing around,
Emily Williams made a layup with five seconds remaining. Again, it was Juliana Park who the game-tying layup as the clock hit zeros. With the game tied at 62, the fans were treated to free basketball in Winchester.
In overtime, the Yellow Jackets had a 70-64 lead with just over two minutes to go in the game.
Maddie Kimble started the comeback with a three before
Terese Greene hit three straight free throws to tie the game at 70 with 34 seconds remaining. The Hornets got the stop they needed and called timeout with 17 seconds left to advance the ball and draw up a play. Shenandoah got a look off the inbounds play, but Macon forced a turnover and scored the game-winning basket with a jumper with just over a second left. The Hornets got one more look as
Maddie Kimble got a half court shot off, but it sailed wide and Randolph-Macon handed the Hornets their second conference loss of the season.
