Hepner's Goal Helps Hornets Tie Bridgewater

BRIDGEWATER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team tied Bridgewater College, 1-1, on the road in ODAC play on Saturday afternoon. This was the second time since 2015 that SU was able to gain a point in the standings against BC in the regular season and the third time overall, including the Hornets advancing in the 2022 ODAC Tournament on penalty kicks.

The Hornets (7-5-2, 2-1-1 ODAC) tied the match on a Karlie Hepner goal in the 51st minute while Kasie Kilmer saved a shot eight minutes later to help earn the tie against the Eagles (3-5-4, 0-2-2).

RECAP

In the seventh minute, a foul by the Hornets gave the Eagles a free kick from the left side of the box. On the set piece, BC crossed the ball to the far post and headed in the game's opening goal. Shenandoah responded with two shots in the next five minutes, that both missed the top of the cage.

In the latter half of the first, Bridgewater got off a shot from just outside the box, which Kasie Kilmer saved to keep the score at 1-0 heading into the break.

Off a corner in the second half for SU, Bridgewater tried to clear the ball but the Hornets' defense kept the possession in their half of the field. This led to Karlie Hepner gaining possession for SU. With the ball just outside the box, Hepner floated in a shot, which missed the outstretched hand of the goalkeeper and ended up in the back of the net, tying the game.

For the final 30 minutes of the contest, Shenandoah had four shots on target, which were all saved by the Eagles. McKenna Newcome led SU with two shots on net throughout the 90 minutes.
