Women's Soccer Defeated by Virginia Wesleyan

WINCHESTER, Va. - In a home ODAC match on Wednesday night, the Shenandoah University women's soccer team lost 3-1 against Virginia Wesleyan University.

The Hornets (7-6-2, 2-2-1 ODAC) led 1-0 three goals in less than 10 minutes put the Marlins (4-4-3, 4-1) ahead in the final moments of the contest.

RECAP

The teams entered the second half still scoreless despite SU outshooting the opposition, 6-1, in the first 45 minutes. VWU's only shot of the first came with five seconds remaining, with Kasie Kilmer making the stop.

Minutes into the final half of play, Kilmer stood tall and made two saves to keep the Hornets and Marlins tied. SU took the second of Kilmer's saves and worked the ball to its offensive half of the field. With possession, McKenna Newcome connected with an open Kayla Jenkins, who then dribbled the ball into the box and went far post for the game's opening tally in the 50th minute.

The goal marked the first time SU held the lead over VWU since a 1-0 lead in the 2019 ODAC Tournament.

Over the next 10 plus minutes of play Shenandoah put four shots on net, each stopped by the Marlins' keeper.

The momentum of the game started to switch sides when off a VWU corner, the ball found the boot of VWU's Shyenne Diaz, who rolled the ball into the open cage, tying the game. Three minutes later, the Marlins took the lead after another chance off a corner kick.

Virginia Wesleyan kept the pressure on Shenandoah and in the 83rd minute, a shot initially saved by SU rebounded right back to the Marlins for an east shot at the net for their third and final goal of the contest.

Shenandoah had 10 shots on net in the game while holding the visitors to eight. Jenkins, Lauren Duffy, and Kaitlyn Wahl all had multiple shots on net.
