Volleyball Rallies Past Ferrum in Five

FERRUM, Va. - On the latter half of a two-game road stand, the Shenandoah University volleyball team rallied back for a 3-2 victory over Ferrum College on Saturday in an ODAC match.

The Hornets (9-11, 2-6 ODAC) forced a fifth set with the Panthers (6-12, 1-6) on a 25-23 win in the fourth, before using a 9-1 run in the final set to seal the win. The victory marks the most wins in a single season for SU since the 2019 season.

RECAP

Trailing by one in the first, Shenandoah strung together consecutive kills from Hannah Hylton, Autumn Stroop, and Vanessa Rodriguez to jump out in front 9-7. The Hornets held on to the lead for the rest of the set as two Ferrum errors ended the frame.

In the fourth set and the Panthers leading the match, 2-1, the two squads saw themselves deadlocked at 10. Six straight SU kills then put them up 16-10. During the 6-0 run, Cheyenne Price and Brooke Gast each had two kills as Rodriguez added three assists. Ferrum was able to bring the set within three points but Rodriguez setup Regan Minney for the kill and the all-important 25th point to force the fifth set.

The Panthers saw themselves up 8-6 as the teams flipped sides of the net. Once the teams flipped sides, Shenandoah flipped the momentum. It started on two Ferrum eros, tying the set at eight, as Rodriguez served up an ace to put the Hornets up one. Another FC error and Rodriguez ace, paired with a kill from Gast put SU up 12-8. Ferrum got one more point but Price and Gast stood tall at the net to end the match with back-to-back blocks.
