No. 8 Messiah Defeats Women's Soccer, 4-1

WINCHESTER, Va. - Rounding out its 2024 non-conference schedule, the Shenandoah University women's soccer team was defeated by No. 8 Messiah University, 4-1, at home on Wednesday night.

Despite out-scoring and out-shooting the Falcons (5-1-3) in the second half, the Hornets (5-5-1) couldn't overcome the four first-half goals that the visitors put on the board.

RECAP

Shenandoah got the opening kickoff and immediately put pressure on the nationally ranked Messiah squad. SU's first chance at scoring came as Lauren Duffy passed the ball into the center of the box, which narrowly missed the boot of Kayla Jenkins and took away the scoring chance.

Messiah then flipped the field and held possession for the majority of the rest of the half with two great chances coming in the 13th minute as a shot from the far side of the box was saved by Kasie Kilmer, who then got right back up to make another save in the bottom left corner of the cage, leading to a Falcons corner kick. The corner kick kept the ball in the Hornets' defensive half of the field and led to Messiah's first goal in the 14th minute.

The number eight team in the nation continued to attack the Hornets' net as Kilmer made another stop, this time from a shot just inside of the box. However, great ball movement led to a goal in the top corner of the net in the 23rd minute for Messiah, making it 2-0.

A foul by Shenandoah led to a penalty kick for Messiah which Kilmer correctly predicted the side of the shot and dove to her right to make the spectacular save and keep the game at 2-0. The SU goalie went on to make one more save before the Falcons added two more goals across the next 19 minutes of play.

In the final moments of the first half, SU received its first shot on goal as Kaitlyn Wahl tried to put one in the back of the net with a heel kick. Messiah went to the halftime break leading 4-0.

The second half was much more back and forth between the two teams with Shenandoah putting up six shots, with two of them on net.

In the 80th minute, the Hornets finally caught a break as a ball ricocheted off a Falcons defender and rolled to the feet of Lucy Greenstein, who drove the ball in and buried a shot top shelf for SU's first tally of the contest and the first goal of her college career.

Shenandoah ended the night with eight shots, with Wahl leading the team with two as 24 different Hornets saw playing time tonight. Kilmer had eight saves throughout the game.
