Women's Soccer Claims 3-1 ODAC Win on Senior Day

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's soccer team capped off senior day with a 3-1 ODAC win over Averett University at home on Saturday night.

McKenna Newcome scored two first half goals for the Hornets (6-5-1, 1-1-0 ODAC) while Ellie Ajello added the third goal of the evening after the Cougars (1-5-2, 0-2-0) scored in the second. Senior Kayla Jenkins tallied an assist in the match.

RECAP

Eight of the 11 SU starters were seniors who were recognized pregame during the senior day festivities at Shentel Stadium.  Of those eight seniors, Madison Heiber got the first chances of the day as she had two early shots that both went wide.

Averett picked up a shot in the 16th minute that just missed the leaping Kasie Kilmer but luckily went out of play, giving SU the ball back. Shenandoah went to the bench and made a handful of substitutions, one of which saw Peyton Lubinsky enter the match. Lubinsky immediately made an impact as she fired off three shots on goal that were both stopped by Averett's Tiia Chrons.

Lubinsky and the Hornets kept applying pressure as McKenna Newcome picked up a shot that was saved, leading to a corner for SU. Lubinsky took the corner and crossed the ball into the box, which then took a hop off the turf and right to Newcome, who then turned around and put her shot past the defenders for the game's opening goal.

Ten minutes later and the half nearing an end, Newcome found herself with another shot, this time it was blocked by a defender's hand inside the box, leading to a penalty kick. Coach Elizabeth Pike called on Newcome to take the kick. Newcome stepped up to the ball and rocketed it right past the keeper to send SU into the half with a two-goal lead.

In the 59th minute, AU's Isabel Semb received a pass and dribbled the ball in free space before shooting it into the right side of the net to cut Averett's deficit down to one. The game remained the same score for 20 minutes until Ellie Ajello gained a pass from Kayla Jenkins inside the box, before placing the ball behind AU's goalie to put her team back up by two and claim the win.

Kasie Kilmer made three saves for SU on the four AU shots on goal. Overall SU outshot the visitors 25-7.
