Volleyball Falls in Four Sets to Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - In the first road ODAC match of the season the Shenandoah University volleyball program fell 3-1 against Averett University on Friday night.

The Hornets (7-9, 0-4 ODAC) won the first set, 25-23, before the Cougars (8-10, 3-2) won the next three sets in large part to a 14-3 run in the third and an 8-1 run in the fourth after the set was tied, 8-8.

RECAP
Shenandoah gained a 6-3 lead in the first set as Cheyenne Price laid down consecutive kills before responding to an Averett point with another kill to put the Hornets ahead by three. A 5-0 run by the host gave them a one-point lead but the Hornets stayed composed and delivered a run of their own to jump ahead 17-12.

The Hornets were up 22-17 but the Cougars eventually came back to tie the opening set, 23-23. Autumn Stroop assisted Hannah Hylton's kill to give SU set point, as Hylton and Ava Pannullo teamed up for the set-winning block.

In the second set, four straight errors by the Cougars put SU up 11-6 but kills by Averett's Hope Parrish and Emily McIntosh eventually gave the home team an 18-17 lead. Down 24-22, Kylie Danella received a set from Hylton to bring SU within one but Averett eventually tied the match with a 25-23 set win.

A misplayed ball by the Cougars gave Regan Minney a service ace and the Hornets an 8-5 lead in the third set as the two ODAC teams looked to jump ahead in the match. The three-point lead would be the largest lead of the rest of the night for SU as Averett put together the previously mentioned 14-3 run, helping them gain a 24-15 lead.

However, the Hornets didn't go away quietly as three Averett attack errors and two Regan Minney kills to cut the Horents' deficit down to four, forcing Averett to call a timeout. Despite SU's comeback attempt, a costly service error won the set for AU and put SU down 2-1 in the game.

Averett's early 5-1 lead in the final set put them up enough to keep Shenandoah from gaining the lead at all in the fourth. The Hornets were however able to tie the set at seven and then eight, but the Cougars responded each time to maintain the advantage on SU.

Each team ended the match with 12 block assists as Ava Pannullo led the Hornets with four, closely followed by Amber Shifflett's three. Hannah Hylton, Brooke Gast, and Cheyenne Price led SU in kills, while Autumn Stroop led the defensive side of the court with 14 digs.
