Volleyball Dethrones Royals for First ODAC Win of the Season

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team picked up its first ODAC win of the season with a 3-1 final at home against Eastern Mennonite University on Wednesday night.

The Hornets (8-10, 1-5 ODAC) overcame an eight-point deficit in the second set to jump out to a 2-0 lead before using a 7-0 run in the fourth set to help them close out the match over the Royals (6-11, 1-6).

RECAP

EMU scored the first point of the night but the Hornets quickly took a 5-1 lead as Brooke Gast and Ava Pannullo stuffed the Royals at the net for the block assist. EMU eventually regained the lead and led 13-12 but four EMU attack errors and kills from Gast and Pannullo put SU ahead, 19-13.

The duo of Vanessa Rodriguez and Cheyenne Price put the set away for the Hornets as Rodriguez set up Price for back-to-back kills and the 25-23 final.

The second set began in favor of the Royals, who jumped out to a 15-7 lead. Their lead stayed intact despite the Hornets getting closer to tying it in the middle of the frame. The tie eventually came as Autumn Stroop perfectly placed a serve in the corner of the court to even the teams up at 19.

The Hornets took 21-20 and 22-21 leads but the Royals went on a 3-0 run and had a chance to end the set with a win. A kill from Pannullo put SU up, 25-24, with EMU then tying the set on the next rally. With the set tied now at 25, SU turned to Hannah Hylton for the go-ahead kill before an ace by Kylie Danella gave SU the 27-25 win.

EMU made the match 2-1 with a 25-22 victory in the third set behind a 3-0 run after the Hornets tied the frame at 22.

The fourth frame remained close until SU broke it wide open with a 7-0 run, extending its lead to double digits. The run started with a kill by Hylton, who also served up an ace in the middle of the stretch.

Shenandoah called a timeout as EMU cut its deficit down to six. With SU leading 21-15, consecutive kills from Hylton and one by Pannullo put the Royals on their heels, with SU up 24-15. EMU put together one more run but an attack error which resulted in the ball going out of the end line, SU was able to walk away with the 25-18 set four win to seal its first ODAC win of the season.

Four Hornets had double-digit kills as Regan Minney, Brooke Gast, and Hannah Hylton led the team with 13 each. Ava Pannullo stood tall at the net with two solo blocks and three block assists. While the Royals were attacking, Autumn Stroop and Hylton were right there for a combined 39 digs.
