Hornets Dominate Wilson for First Win of the Season

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team defeated Wilson College, 89-69, on Wednesday night in the team's first road game of the season.

The 89 points for the Hornets (1-2) are the most for the program in a single game during Nick Doyle's time as head coach and the most by the team since the 2021-22 season. Shenandoah shot 63.8% (37-58), which is the best shooting percentage for the team in a game since January 2019. The defense held the Phoenix (1-2) to just 38.5% (25-65) shooting, the lowest percentage for SU's opposition so far this season.

RECAP

The Hornets started out the evening with a Joseph Baldwin layup before Dorian Davis nailed a turnaround jumper to put SU up 4-3. Wilson responded with a layup to go up by one but Marcus NeSmith hit a three to give the Hornets a two-point lead.

Later in the first, Kendrick Robinson connected with Landon Russ for a three that pushed SU out in front by nine. The three-ball came up large again minutes later as Ellis Wright buried a shot for the ten-point cushion. A 7-0 run but the Hornets put them up 26-9 just under halfway into the first half.

The Hornets stayed up by double-digits as Baldwin ended the half for the Hornets with a layup to give them a 15-point lead at the half. Baldwin ended the first half with 14 points on perfect shooting from the field.

Nearly five minutes into the second half, Wilson converted on a free throw attempt to cut its deficit to 14. The deficit for the home team would expand quickly as Shenandoah used buckets from Wright, Davis, and Joshua Stephen to go up by 22 with 13:34 left in the game.

Davis, NeSmith, and Shamir Taylor landed threes to keep the Hornets' lead above the 20-point margin for the next several minutes.

Shenandoah used a layup by John Allen to get its lead up to 24, the largest of the game for the visitors. Wilson got its deficit back down to 20 but Shenandoah got right back to a 24-point lead with 1:22 left thanks to points in the paint from Wright and Allen. Kellen Tyson scored on the fastbreak as time expired for his first point in a Hornets uniform.

Five Hornets hit double-digits in the score column with Baldwin leading all SU players with 18 points. NeSmith and Wright matched each other with 14 points while Stephen and Davis added 13 and 11 points, respectively. Stephen had team-highs in the assist and rebound categories.
