Football Cruises to Win at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. - The Shenandoah University football team rushed for five touchdowns in a 41-14 ODAC win at Averett University on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (6-2, 3-2 ODAC) scored all 41 points in the first three quarters before the Cougars (2-6, 0-5) added two touchdowns in the fourth. The defense added three sacks and three interceptions behind SU's 379 offensive yards.

Six of the first seven plays for Shenandoah were passes but SU turned to the run game for its final three plays of the opening drive, each run going to Jalen Redfearn. The running back took the first two runs for six and seven yards, respectively, before punching in a touchdown from one yard out on the final rush.

A sack by Jake Jack forced an Averett three-and-out which gave SU's offense the ball right back. Sean Perry returned the punt 35 yards to place SU inside Cougar territory. 

It took just six plays for SU to travel 35 yards and find the endzone once again for the 14-0 lead in the first. Bryce Buchanan was the one to get through the Cougar defense and find the endzone.

The defense came up huge again for Shenandoah as just three plays into Averett's drive, Quante Redd intercepted a deep pass and returned it back 27 yards to put the Hornets inside the redzone. Just two plays later, Redfearn rushed to the right for a nine-yard touchdown, putting SU up 21-0.

Scott Martin nailed a 21-yard field goal to make it 24-0 on SU's first full drive of the second quarter.

On Averett's next drive, following a sack by Liban Farah, the Cougars overthrew a receiver and were picked off by Tate Smaldone around midfield. The interception marked the first of the sophomore's career.

On SU's final drive of the first half, Steven Hugney found Broden Doemico for 29 yards which put SU at the Averett 15 yard line. Three plays later, Redfearn scored his third touchdown of the afternoon, setting a career record for touchdowns in a game.

The Hornets led 31-0 at the half.

Buchanan ended SU's first drive of the third quarter with a 17-yard touchdown on a 4th-and-2 play. The running back had a 32-yard rush towards the start of the drive which was the longest run of the afternoon for SU. Buchanan ended the day with five carries for 64 yards and two touchdowns.

Now down 38-0, Averett looked to find the endzone on a 27-yard pass attempt but was picked off by Sean Perry. The 5th year now has interceptions in back-to-back games and in three of his last four.

The interception led to Scott Martin making a 35-yard field goal for SU's final points of the game. 

Averett held the ball for over 10 minutes in the fourth quarter and scored touchdowns on two of its three drives.

Hugney finished the day with 18 completions for 239 passing yards. Domenico had five catches for 105 yards, leading the Hornets in both categories.

Shenandoah's defense stuffed the Cougars nine times behind the line. Quante Redd and Haley Van Voorhis added pass breakups to the Hornets' totals.

UP NEXT

The Hornets host senior day next Saturday against Hampden-Sydney in the final home game of the season. More than 25 seniors will be recognized next weekend.
