Wrestling Starts Season at Ned McGinley Invitational

WILKES BARRE, Pa. – The Shenandoah University wrestling team opened the 2024-25 season at the Ned McGinley Invitational hosted by King's College.  The Hornets finished in 11th place in the 15-team field, with Cannon Long (157 weight class) and Dylan Weaver (174 weight class) placing in the opening tournament. 
 
Anakin Burks – 125
 
Burks won his first match by pin in 35 seconds before going on to win by tech fall 17-2. He then fell by pin in his next two matches.  He won be decision 3-0 over Thomas Longo from Wilkes and dropped his final match by a decision 8-2..
 
Elliot Rivera – 125
 
Rivera fell in his opening match by pin.  Won by tech fall in his second match 21-5, before dropping his final match to Vincent Principe from Stevens by tech fall.
 
Xavier Ramsey – 133
 
Ramsey had an opening match bye before falling in back-to-back matches by tech fall.
 
Sean Rinebolt – 141
 
Rinebolt went 2-1 on the day and started with a major decision victory over Washington and Lee 19-6In his second match, fell by pin fall in the first round before winning his final match by decision 10-7.
 
Gordon Watson – 149
 
Watson had a first-round bye before beating Jackson Glicksman from Roger Williams by pin fall in the first period.  Watson dropped his next match by tech fall 16-1, before picking up a victory due to a medical forfeit.  Watson ended the day with a tech fall victory 17-0 over Jared Lee from Rochester Institute of Technology. 
 
Hunter Ballantine – 149
 
Ballantine opened with a bye before falling by pin to Colton Thorpe from Wilkes.  He then picked up a win by decision 9-2, and then a pin victory in the first period over Logan Weaver.  In his final match, Ballantine fell by pin in the first period.
 
Manny Lucas – 149
 
Lucas went 1-2 on the day after an opening round bye, he won by an 18-12 decision before falling in his next two contests by a major decision.
 
Bobby Hopkins – 157
 
Hopkins opened with a bye.  In his next match he picked up his first win by tech fall 25-8 over Xander De selm from York.  Hopkins dropped his next two bouts, first by decision to Waynesburg and then by pin to the USMAPS/Army Prep.
 
Cannon Long – 157 (5th place)
 
Long had an opening bye.  He then picked up back-to-back first-round pins.  His first pin came against New York University, while his second was against Rochester Institute of Technology.  Long fell by tech fall in his next match before picking up his third victory by a pin on the day.  He won his final two matches of the tournament, his fourth win by pin, and then a final victory in an 8-7 thrilling decision over York College. 
 
Noah Diamond – 157
 
Diamond won his first match by pin over Pierre-Jovan Fuentes from York College.  He then dropped his next match by pin before going on to win his next two matches again by fall.  He dropped his final match of the day to Gordon Murray Roger Williams by tech fall 17-2.
 
Tyler Tarallo – 165
 
Tarallo went 1-2 on the day, dropping his first match 15-0 for a tech fall and then picking up a win in a tightly contested, high-scoring decision 17-15 over Hunter College.  Tarallo dropped the final match by fall to Michael Malftiano from Roger Williams.
 
Dylan Weaver -174
 
Weaver won his first two matches of the day, first, a 17-1 tech fall victory before picking up a first-period pin over Caleb Borchers from the US Merchant Marine Academy.  Weaver dropped his next contest by a major decision 14-1, but went on to win his next to matches.  He picked up a tech fall over Ian Flannigan of Stevens and one more first period pin over Joshua Wilkins from Wilkes.
 
Dylan Wiegert – 184
 
Wiegert went 1-2 on the day and started by dropping his first match by pin fall to Patrick Gordon from Wilkes.  Wiegert won by a major decision 11-2 in his second bout before being pinned in the second period to Ronald Dietz.
 
Robert Keener – 184
 
Keener went 0-2 on the day dropping both matches by a 15-0 tech fall.
 
Daniel Basil Barker – 285
 
Basil-Barker went 0-2 on the day falling in the first round to Caleb Burkhart from Wilkes by pin before falling in a 7-1 decision to Derek Martin of York College.
 
Rives Hargis – 285
 
Hargis dropped a tough opening-round bout by a 4-2 decision to Rocco Arduini of Keystone before picking up his first win of the day in a 3-2 decision over Ben Rosa from Stevens.  Hargis dropped the final match by a first-period pin to Max Ruiz from Stevens.
 
New York University took home the team title with 175.5 points, 40 points ahead of Rochester Institute of Technology.

The Hornets will be back on the mat next weekend when they travel to Danville to participate in the Cougar Invitational.
