Volleyball Sweeps Penn St. Behrend and Pitt.-Greensburg in Tri-Match

GREENSBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team swept Penn State Behrend and the University of Pittsburg Greensburg in a tri-match on Sunday afternoon. The Hornets day was highlighted by (12-12) overcoming a 24-13 deficit in the second set of their match over the Bobcats (3-25).

PENN STATE BEHREND RECAP

The Lions (11-17) quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first set but a service ace by Autumn Stroop put the Hornets in front 5-4. The teams went back-and-forth with 10 more ties in the frame until SU pulled ahead by two on a solo block by Ava Pannullo

With Shenandoah up 23-21, another solo block by Pannullo gave them set point but the Lions quickly made it a one-point set on back-to-back kills. An assist from Vanessa Rodriguez to Brooke Gast won the set, 25-23, for SU.

Behrend once again took an early lead in the middle set, 4-0. The Hornets then fell behind, 12-7, but evened the set thanks to a 5-0 run with two blocks and two kills from Gast. Rodriguez earned the assist on both of Gast's kills.

Despite the 5-0 run, SU wasn't able to capitalize and take the lead until a 9-0 run helped them finally give them the lead. Cara Butler picked up three aces during the run that put the Hornets in front 24-18. Shenandoah took the set on a kill from Hannah Hylton.

Up 2-0 now in the match, Shenandoah finally struck first in a set as an ace from Rodriguez and a kill and block from Gast put them ahead, 3-0. The Lions tied the set twice at seven and 14 but could not hold the lead themselves as SU won the final set 25-22.

Hylton led SU with eight kills across the three sets while Kylie Danella had a team-high 12 assists.

The Hornets stood tall at the front of the net, holding a 9-7 advantage in blocks. Ashlynn Spence, Amber Shifflett, Cheyenne Price, and Danica Duncan each had one.

PITT.-GREENSBURG RECAP

Shenandoah won the first set 25-14 thanks to a 7-1 run that saw them tie the match at eight and then take the lead, 14-9. Once SU took the lead, they didn't look back, holding the Bobcats to just five more points.

Hylton delivered kills on two of the final three SU points as Gast won the set with a kill of her own on an assist from Rodriguez.

In the second set, the Bobcats overcame an early 4-1 deficit which then turned into a 24-13 lead for the host. Shenandoah, with their backs against the wall, went on a remarkable 13-0 run to win the frame.

Three Hornets had a kill during the run with Spence leading the way with three. Hylton, serving the final 12 straight points of the set, had three aces including on the set-winning point.

Shenandoah couldn't carry over the momentum from the second right way into the third as they fell behind 13-8. Price blocked a Bobcat attack to even the set at 14 but Pitt.-Greensburg kept pulling ahead.

SU was forced to tie the set four more times until finally taking the lead, 23-22, on a Hylton kill. This put the Hornets in the right spot to win the match, which they did on an ace from Butler and another kill by Hylton.

Hylton once again led the Hornets in kills, this time with 13. Rodriguez tied her season-best in assists with 23.
