NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's basketball team opened the Captains Clash Tournament with a 75-70 victory over Asbury University (Ky.) on Wednesday night. The Hornets (6-2, 3-0) showcased resilience and teamwork in a tightly contested game that saw multiple lead changes and came down to the final seconds.
Senior Terese Greene led all scorers with a dominant 23-point performance, shooting 7-for-14 from the field, 2-for-4 from beyond the arc, and 7-for-9 from the charity stripe. Greene also contributed three rebounds, three assists, and a critical block on the game's final shot to seal the win. With her 23 points, Greene cemented her place in Shenandoah's record books, entering the top 10 all-time scorers with 1,236 career points.
Graduate student Maddie Kimble added 12 points, knocking down three triples and dishing out a season-high eight assists, narrowly missing a double-double. Shawnise Campbell recorded her third double-double of the season with 10 points and 11 rebounds, while Addisyn Banks delivered a stellar performance off the bench, scoring 10 points in just 12 minutes, including two clutch three-pointers. Emily Williams dominated the boards, pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds to go along with her seven points.
The team's nine made three-pointers tied for ninth-most in program history, while their 24 assists ranked as the third-highest single-game total.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The game began with Greene setting the tone, sinking a three-pointer on Shenandoah's opening possession. Despite a back-and-forth first quarter, Asbury capitalized on an 8-2 run to take a 21-15 lead into the second.
The Hornets responded in the second quarter with a balanced attack. Addisyn Banks drilled a three to spark the offense, and back-to-back threes from Gabby Krystofiak tied the game at 28. Shenandoah closed the half with a slim 40-38 advantage after a late jumper by Greene and a strong defensive effort.
The third quarter remained evenly matched until a 7-0 Shenandoah run, capped by a Maddie Kimble three-pointer, pushed the lead to 54-47. Asbury quickly answered with a 5-0 run of their own, but a clutch three from Banks right before the buzzer gave the Hornets a 57-52 edge heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, both teams ramped up the intensity. Shenandoah stretched its lead to seven, but Asbury refused to back down, keeping the game within reach. Greene's composure at the free-throw line and her critical block in the final moments secured the victory for the Hornets.
