Men's Basketball Claws Schuylkill in Non-Conference Victory

SCHUYLKILL HAVEN, Pa. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team got back in the win column on Monday night with a 68-55 road victory over Penn State Schuylkill.

The Hornets (4-5) saw themselves leading by only one point in the early going of the second half before outscoring the Lions (6-5) by 12 points across the final 16 minutes of the contest.

RECAP

Shenandoah's defense held Schuylkill to one made basket in the first five minutes of the game as the Hornets took an 11-2 lead behind five points from Dorian Davis and a pair of made shots by Joshua Stephen.

Out of a timeout by the home squad, Shenandoah's lead shrunk to four points until a corner three by Shamir Taylor gave SU some momentum back. That momentum quickly swung back in the favor of the Lions, gaining their first lead of the game on a three of their own with just over eight minutes left in the first. On the next possession, Stephen quieted the crowd with a shot from beyond the arc, propelling the Hornets back into the lead.

With four minutes left in the half, a hustle play by Elia Morandotti extended a Hornets possession after a missed shot. Morandotti's hustle directly led to an open John Allen for an easy dunk, placing Shenandoah in front by 11. The Lions got their deficit back down to single digits by the end of the half as the visitors led, 35-28.

The second half opened with Kendrick Robinson grabbing an offensive rebound and gaining a second chance layup. Schuylkill scored on its first two possessions of the half to only trail by five. After neither team scored for the next few minutes, the Lions made two jumpers to come within one, forcing coach Nick Doyle to call a 30-second timeout.

Out of the timeout, SU picked up two quick free throws from Shamir Taylor and added support off a three by Morandotti to pad its lead.

Minute later, the Hornets successfully took a minute off the clock with three consecutive offensive rebounds on on possession. The long possession was capped by a floater from Stephen. The guard applied pressure on the ensuing inbound and forced a turnover which then led to Davion Roberts picking up his first points of the evening to put Shenandoah up by nine.

With just under four minutes left, Morandotti connected with Allen once again for the big man's second dunk of the game, giving Shenandoah a double-digit lead once again. The Hornets earned six more points throughout the final minutes as they walked away with the 13-point victory.

Ten Hornets scored tonight as Stpehn led the charge with 19 points. Joseph Baldwin showed his presence in the paint with a game-high 12 rebounds.
