Men's Basketball Defeated by No. 7 Tigers Behind Second Half Push

HAMPDEN-SYDNEY, Va. - After a week off from competition, the Shenandoah University men's basketball team returned to the court on Tuesday night and was defeated 80-63 at No. 7 Hampden-Sydney College.

The Hornets (4-6, 0-3 ODAC) overcame an 11-point deficit and went up by one just minutes into the second half, however, the nationally-ranked Tigers (8-1, 3-0) regained their lead and outscored SU by 14 points in the second.

RECAP

Hampden-Sydney made its first couple of shots of the night and held Shenandoah to a singular free throw for the early 6-1 lead. As the Hornets struggled to make their shots, the H-SC lead quickly extended out to 11.

Shamir Taylor got the Hornets rolling with two threes, bringing the deficit back down to single digits. Shenandoah turned to big man Joseph Baldwin for back-to-back layups with the latter of which turning into an and-one after Baldwin drew contact in the paint.

Shenandoah continued to trail over the next several minutes but gained buckets from Gavin Bizyak, Joshua Stephen, and Dorian Davis to remain close to the hosts. The Tigers led by one but a missed shot transitioned into a quick jumper mid-range jumper for Davis, as the Hornets finally gained the advantage.

However, two late fouls by Shenandoah ensured that Hampden-Sydney gained control once again and led heading into the break.

Shenandoah converted its first three shots of the second half as Davis made the first two and then connected with Stephen for a three, which put SU back in front. The lead didn't stay with SU long as H-SC led by seven just moments later.

A three from Bizyak and layups from guards Taylor and Stephen kept the Hornets within reach of the Tigers. Despite sticking close, Shenandoah once again struggled to buy a basket and the Tigers took full advantage of that and carried a 14-point lead with eight minutes left.

The rest of the game continued to play in favor of the Tigers as they'd led by 21 late in the game until Davion Roberts and Taylor got the final deficit down to 17 with late points.

Five of the seven Hornets to score reached double digits as Taylor led the way with 13. Baldwin posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. The center also added three steals to his game resume.
