Men's Basketball Takes No. 3 R-MC to OT in Loss

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team took No. 3 Randolph-Macon College to overtime in a 72-69 home ODAC loss on Wednesday night.

The Hornets (16-8, 7-8 ODAC) tied the game 63-63 with a Nic Pullum layup with 0:15 left on the clock and forced a Yellow Jackets (21-3, 14-1) turnover with a second left to force the game into OT. The visitors made a three and two free throws to jump ahead by five in the final 11 seconds of the game.

RECAP

After R-MC missed the later half of a pair of free throws, Shenandoah went on a 7-0 run to take an early advantage. Landon Russ started the run with a three and added a mid-range jumper. On the next possession, Joshua Stephen found Kendrick Robinson in the paint to make it 7-2.

Randolph-Macon pulled within one but Joseph Baldwin went deep and nailed his first three of the game. SU took an eight-point lead minutes later with another long ball, this time from Marcus NeSmith.

SU had the largest lead of the game at 10 points with just over half of the first half left. R-MC tied the game 24-24 with four minutes left in the half as they went on a 14-4 run. They'd then take just their second lead of the game before Evan Makle found his shot to put SU up 27-26 at the break.

Randolph-Macon went 1-2 from the charity stripe to start the second half, tying the game at 27 a side. Shenandoah pulled right back ahead with back-to-back three-pointers from Richard Rogers and Russ. The three ball rained down in the second half as the two teams combined for 11 makes from behind the arch in the final 20 minutes of regulation.

Randolph-Macon ended up taking a five-point lead with just two minutes left in the second but the Hornets went to Pullum to crawl back. Pullum used his power to lay down a dunk and followed it up with more points in the paint to tie the game.

On R-MC's final possession of regulation, they dribbled away the clock looking for a good shot but the SU defense forced a turnover and called a quick timeout. With the ball still on the Shenandoah defensive side, SU passed the ball to half-court for a last-second shot. The shot would fall short, forcing OT.

Makle and Pullum scored first for SU in the OT period, but with every SU point, R-MC was right there with a response. The Yellow Jackets went on a 7-0 run over the last 2:30 of the game and held SU scoreless until a final-second layup by the Hornets.

Pullum picked up a double-double with 23 points (career high) and 10 rebounds. Russ, starting in his first game of the season, had 16 points and seven assists.

Shenandoah shot over 50% from the field and went 33.3% from behind the arc.
