Women's Basketball Secures No. 2 Seed After Win at Guilford

GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Shenandoah University women's basketball team secured the No. 2 seed in the 2024 ODAC Tournament after beating Guilford College 73-65 on Saturday afternoon in the regular season finale.

The Hornets (19-6, 14-4 ODAC) trailed after the first quarter but outscored the Quakers (18-6, 13-5) in the final three quarters to take the win and lock up the second seed.

RECAP

Entering the game, both Shenandoah and Guilford were tied in the ODAC standings with the winner of today's game getting the second seed in the upcoming ODAC tournament.

Guilford kickstarted the game with back-to-back threes to take a 6-0 lead over Shenandoah. The Hornets got their first basket from their top scorer Terese Greene. Emily Williams scored to make it a 6-4 game as Kayla Maxson buried a three-pointer to give Shenandoah its first lead of the game. After assisting on Maxson's three, Williams would take a fastbreak bucket to make it 9-6 in favor of Shenandoah.

Guilford closed out the first quarter on a 7-0 run, taking a 13-9 lead into the second.

After falling behind by five, Williams scored Shenandoah's next five points to start a 7-2 run, helping them tie the game 20-20 with 3:45 remaining in the second. Guilford regained the lead but Shenandoah got points from Addisyn Banks, Maxson, and Williams to close out the half. Shenandoah led 27-22 at the end of the first half.

Shenandoah started the third quarter on a 10-0 run, taking a 37-22 lead as they pulled away from the Quakers. During the run, Greene scored eight points with Gabby Krystofiak adding the other SU basket.

On a Zoe Smith free throw, Shenandoah took an 18-point lead but the home team didn't go away quietly as they crawled back and cut the SU lead to six entering the fourth quarter.

Guilford would hit a shot from behind the arc early in the fourth to bring its deficit down to just five points. Krystofiak responded by making two shots including a three to put SU back up by double-digits.

Maggie Rooklin did the same thing as Krystofiak, extending Shenandoah's lead to 59-44 with 6:11 left in the game. Still, Guilford didn't back down as they'd once again bring the game within five points.

As Shawnise Campbell made a pair of layups, Guilford would respond to keep the game close. Up by five with under a minute left, both Greene and Maddie Kimble were sent to the charity stripe. The duo capitalized on their attempts, giving Shenandoah a nine-point lead with 41 ticks left in the regular season.

Guilford hit another three to make it a two-possession ball game but they couldn't stop the Hornets as Kimble and Greene both made another pair of free throws to seal the win.

Greene led Shenandoah with 16 points, going 6-6 at the line. Williams finished the game with 13 points, seven boards, and four assists, the latter two were both team-highs in the game.
