Late Goal Gives Women's Soccer the Win in Season Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - In the first home game of the season, the Shenandoah Univesity women's soccer team prevailed 3-2 in a thriller against Marymount University on Friday night at home in non-conference play.

The Hornets (1-0), who just gave up the game-tying goal, were able to pull ahead with less than 90 seconds as Kirklyn Wilson found the back of the net, putting SU on top over the Saints (0-1).

RECAP
In the first half, it was all Shenandoah as they outshot Marymount 12-0 in the first 45. In the final four minutes of the opening half, SU picked up four shots on goal, including back-to-back shots from McKenzie Shea and Lauren Duffy that were both shut down by the Saints goalie.

A last-second shot that was saved by Marymount in the first half led to a corner kick for SU which barely missed the boot of multiple Hornets, leading to a 0-0 tie heading into the break.

Minutes into the second half, after a throw-in and a cross into the box, the ball found its way to the foot of Peyton Lubinsky as she floated the ball over the goalie's reach and into the back of the twine to put SU on top, 1-0.

Shenandoah continued to put pressure on the Saints which led to a 61st minute turnover by the visiting team. The turnover proved to be costly as Kirklyn Wahl received a pass from Ellie Ajello in the middle of the box and was able to squeak the ball past the Saints' defense for her first of the season. SU led 2-0 with just under 30 minutes left to play.

The two-goal deficit didn't slow Marymount down as they rebounded and put pressure on the Hornets. A foul by the Hornets led to a prime penalty kick opportunity for the Saints, who ended up delivering and cutting their deficit in half with roughly 11 minutes left.

This led to a swing in momentum which proved to be dangerous to the Hornets' lead. In the 89th minute, a misplayed clear by SU led directly to the game-tying goal from 30 yards out for Marymount.

The game looked to be heading to a draw until Shenandoah drew a foul 25 yards from the net. The chance of taking home the win for SU laid at the boot of Chandler Gallant. With everyone in the stands on the edge of their seats, Gallant delivered a cross towards the post of the goal which deflected off the foot of Kirklyn Wilson for the go-ahead goal.

The late tally was just what Shenandoah needed to go on a win, 3-2, in the opening game of the season.
