Women's Soccer Defeated by No. 5 CNU, 1-0

NEWPORT NEWS, Va.- In a non-conference game on the road, the Shenandoah University women's soccer team was defeated by No. 5 Christopher Newport University, 1-0, on Sunday afternoon.

The Hornets (1-1) allowed a goal in the latter half of the first while then holding the nationally-ranked Captains (1-0-1) scoreless in the final 45 minutes. CNU held SU to just three shots throughout the contest.

IN BRIEF

Starting goalie Kasie Kilmer was kept busy in the first 15 minutes as the senior made two saves to keep the game scoreless. The Hornets' first chance came on a corner kick in the 24th minute but were unable to get a shot off, as CNU would go down and get their own corner kick. CNU's chance led to a shot that went wide of the cage.

Minutes later CNU fired off another shot that went wide but the home team kept possession of the ball. A pass from the right side led to CNU tucking a shot into the left half of the net for the game's only goal in the 38th minute.

Early in the second half, Lauren Duffy put SU's first shot on the board which gave SU another corner kick. A foul by the Hornets erased another chance at a shot as the Captains would go down the pitch and rattle five shots off. One of their chances rang off the post while Kilmer was able to stop another.

Over an 11 minute span, CNU gained four corners but the SU defense stayed strong and kept the ball out of the net.

SU's two best chances came in the 68th and 73rd minute as Kayla Jenkins and McKenna Newcome both got shots off but each shot was ultimately saved by CNU. These were the final two chances for the Hornets as CNU regained control for the final 15 minutes and held on for the 1-0 win.

Overall Kilmer made seven saves on the eight shots on goal for CNU.

This was the first meeting between the two Virginia teams since 2014. SU defeated CNU back in 2011 for the USA South Championship.
