Volleyball Splits in Opener

IRVING, Tx. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team started its 2024 campaign with day one of the Austin College/University of Dallas Tournament. The Hornets (1-1) walked away with a win over the University of Dallas after falling to the University of Wisconsin-Superior in the opening match.

MATCH ONE RECAP

The Hornets picked up their first point of the season as Hannah Hylton earned her first kill as a Hornet on an assist from Kylie Danella. Two rallies later Danella converted a kill of her own to give SU the early 3-0 lead in the first.

SU fell behind but strung together four straight points, taking a 9-7 lead, capped off by two kills from Regan Minney. As SU held a 13-12 lead in the middle of the frame, UW-Superior went on a run of six straight points to jump out ahead, 18-13, before ultimately taking the set 25-18.

For the final two sets of the match, UW-Superior scored the first point and held onto the lead for the entirety of both frames.

Early in the second, Shenandoah pulled within one twice. First, it was Hylton picking up a service ace to make it 2-3. Two rallies later, Danella set up Minney for the kill making it 3-4. The Yellow Jackets converted a 10-2 run, pulling ahead 15-6. Both teams picked up 10 more points each, as the Yellow Jackets went up 2-0 in the match.

Despite committing eight errors in the third set, Superior still won the set 25-12, ending the match.

Danella and Hylton led the Hornets with five kills each with Minney and Brooke Gast closely behind them with four. In her first match as a Hornet, Autumn Stroop gained a team-high 13 digs.

MATCH TWO RECAP

Kills from Kylie Danella and Brooke Gast helped put SU up early in the first set against the University of Dallas but the host team had an answer as they went up 9-8. The Hornets recovered and went on a 6-2 run to regain control and not let go for the rest of the set. Over the next 11 SU points, Dallas committed five errors helping SU take the 1-0 set lead.

Dallas didn't let the first set loss bother them as they went on to win the next two frames and put the Hornets on the brink of the sweep.

Shenandoah regrouped and put the pressure right back on Dallas as SU went up 10-5 in the fourth set. A combination of nine Dallas errors and five SU kills gave the Hornets the win in the fourth set, at they were able to send the match to the all-important fifth frame.

Two more Dallas errors and a service ace from Hannah Hylton put SU up 3-1 in the early goings of the fifth set. Dallas took the lead 4-3 but seniors Brooke Gast and Cheyenne Price put SU back on top with a kill and an ace.

The hosts pulled within a one-point margin but Shenandoah had an answer as they strung together seven unanswered points to go up 13-5. Dallas tried to pull closer to Shenandoah, but two more errors helped lead SU into the win and avoid the opening day sweep.

Price, Hylton, and Gast led the Hornets in Kills for the second game while Danella propelled the team with 24 assists.
