Overtime Goals Pushes Shorewomen Past Hornets

CHESTERTOWN, Md, - The #16 Shenandoah University field hockey team for the second went to overtime for the second straight game, unfortunately, the Hornets came out on the wrong side of the contest 2-1 to the Washington College Shorewomen.  The Hornets (2-2) got a goal from someone not named Cassidy Morrison for the first time this season after Mairead McKibbin found the back of the cage for the first time this season.  The Hornets got outshot 15-6, lost the corner battle 10-4, and spent most of the game in their territory.  Taylor Swann started in goal for the Hornets again and made eight saves in the contest but the two goals, one on a penalty stroke and the other coming off of a corner in overtime.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got off to a quick start in the first as Mairead McKibbin fired two shots in the period to go with one from Farren Winter, while earning three corners in the stanza.  Swann and Shenandoah were not tested at all in the first, as the Hornets held the Shorewomen to no shots or corners.

However, momentum started to shift in the second as Washington College came out on the attack.  The Shorewomen earned back-to-back corners while Swann made the save off a shot on the second corner.  Camryn DeLeva made what could be the play of the season to save a goal with a defensive save, but a foul occurred awarding Washington College a penalty stroke.  Making a save on a penalty stroke last game against Gettysburg, Swann guessed the right way on the penalty stroke, but just missed and the ball found the back of the cage.  That lead was short-lived, after giving up another corner, the Hornets escaped that attack, and Mairead McKibbin went dribbling down the right side and fired a shot past the keeper for her first goal of the season.  The Hornets went into the break tied at 1-1.

In the third quarter, the Hornets got a shot from McKibbin that sailed wide as Swann made one save and fought off two corners.  Similarly in the fourth, the Hornets had a tough time generating any offense while Swann made three more saves and successfully defended two more corners.

With the game still tied at 1 after 60 minutes of play, the Hornets went to overtime for the second straight game.  But since the momentum shifted after the first quarter, the Shorewomen got five shots off compared to no shots by Shenandoah.  Washington College sent a shot wide of the cage and both teams started to head the other way, and at the last second, the referee issued a corner to the Shorewomen.  The first shot off of the corner but with Swann on the ground, the ball got poked past her, and Washington College was there to secure the win.

UP NEXT

The Hornets will return home on Saturday as they continue non-conference play when Mary Washington comes to town.  That game is scheduled to start at noon.
