Game Recap: Men's Soccer | | Matt Milich

Hornets Tame Nittany Lions in 3-0 Victory

HARRISBURG, Pa. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team got back into the win column with a 3-0 win over Penn State Harrisburg.  The Hornets (5-2-1) got two first-half goals from Nathan Yared and Jarbin Rodriguez with Chinedu Ikem adding an insurance goal late in the second.  Nathan Yared led the Hornets with five shots, with three of them target and one goal.  Ikem and Rodriguez were the other Hornets with multiple shots, and both players found the back of the net.  Gianncarlo Alderetes started in net for the Hornets and made one save while getting another clean sheet in the shutout.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Hornets got off to a quick start with two shots from Chinedu Ikem and Gabe Eckenrode within the first 17 minutes of play.  Alderetes got tested early in the first half making his only save of the game in the 19th minute.  The Hornets earned a corner in the 22nd minute but could not connect.  The Hornets finally got on the board when a yellow card in the box led to a penalty kick which Nathan Yared buried for his fourth goal of the season.  It did not take long for the Hornets to build on that lead, as a minute later, Shenandoah earned another corner.  Kyle Welch got the corner started and played a short ball to Rodriguez who took one touch outside the 18 and fired a rocket to the far post beating the keeper.  Harrisburg had two chances off of corners and a header that went wide, but Shenandoah took a 2-0 lead into the break.

In the second half, the Hornets continued to apply pressure when Rodriguez's shot got blocked, earning Shenandoah another corner.  Ikem, Tas Raji, Welch, and Chris Chaplin all fired shots but the Hornets could not add to their lead.  Ikem finally cashed in in the 74th minute to make it a 3-0, the goal was his fourth of the season to put him in a tie for a team-high with Yared.  The Shenandoah defense and midfield did a fantastic job keeping Harrisburg shotless over the final 35 minutes of play, allowing Shenandoah to pick up their fifth win of the season.

UP NEXT

The Hornets continue their five-game road trip when they travel to Newark, NJ for a battle with Rutgers-Newark on Saturday.  That game is scheduled to start at 3 pm.
