NEWARK, NJ. – The Shenandoah University men's soccer team lost a non-conference matchup with Rutgers-Newark Saturday afternoon on the road 3-0. The Hornets (5-3-1) managed 19 shots, with four coming on the frame, but came away empty-handed. The Hornets had the edge in corner kicks but could not cash in off of one those either.
Jarbin Rodriguez led the way with six shots for the Hornets with
Nathan Yared and
Kyle Welch right behind him with four and three each, respectively.
Gianncarlo Alderetes started in net for the Hornets and came up with two saves while taking his first loss of the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Hornets came out quickly, with Yared,
Chinedu Ikem, and Rodriguez all firing shots within the first eight minutes of the game, but all of those shots were off-target. Rutgers responded with two shots of their own, both off frame, before taking a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 18
th minute. Shenandoah continued to pressure the backline, but again, Shenandoah could not find the back of the net. The Hornet defense and midfield stiffened up as well, as they only gave up one more shot the rest of the first half, which Alderetes stopped. The Hornets went into the half down 1-0.
In the second half, the Hornets had three quality chances within the first five minutes of play. All shots were saved by the keeper. The Hornets frantically tried to get the equalizing goal but could not figure out the backline and keeper for the Scarlet Raiders. While the Hornets continued pressure, Newark was content to strike on the counterattack. In the 66
th minute, the Scarlet Raiders added to their lead, making it 2-0 in favor of the home team. Shenandoah outshot the Scarlett Raiders 19-9, but Newark made the most of their limited opportunities, as they added one more goal in the final minute of play to win 3-0.
UP NEXT
The Hornets continue their road trip as they will open conference play next Saturday on the road against Ferrum. That game will start at 3 pm.
