Football Wins Fourth Straight Home Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - In the first home game of the 2024 season, the Shenandoah University football team defeated Rhodes College, 35-21, on Saturday night in front of a packed Shentel Stadium.

The game, originally scheduled for 7 p.m., was pushed back to an 8:30 p.m. kickoff following severe weather working its way through Winchester. The Hornets (2-0) came out of the delay slow, going down 14-7 at the half to the Lynx (1-2), but used a 21-point fourth quarter to secure the victory.

Jalen Redfearn ran for two touchdowns while Steven Hugney added three through the air for SU.

RECAP

In the second quarter, following a 4th-and-7 conversion, Rhodes College found the endzone first on a 15-yard passing play with 10:45 left in the opening half. Two Shenandoah drives later, Steven Hugney helped orchestrate a seven-play drive, which saw the QB throw five completions.

The final completion of the drive was a pass up the middle to Myles Miller for a 14-yard score. The Hornets were put in good field position the play prior thanks to Issac Tucker drawing a defensive pass interference call that set SU up in the redzone. Kicker Scott Martin went on to make the point after, his first of five made PATs in the game.

The 7-7 tie didn't last long as Rhodes took only 2:20 to go down the field and regain the lead, following an 18-yard passing TD. The visitors carried the 14-7 lead into the locker room.

The Lynx got ball to start the third quarter and the SU defense stepped up big time, stopping the Rhodes offense. This allowed the SU offense the chance to tie the game once again. Following a 22-yard completion to Broden Domenico, the Hornets turned to the ground game and capped off the 63-yard drive with two runs from Jalen Redfearn, the final of which was an eight-yard rush up the middle and into the Shentel Stadium endzone.

Three plays into the fourth, Hugney went deep and connected with Domenico for a gain of 42, placing the Hornets offense at the Lynx 24. Hugney then used his legs to pick up another six yards, before fighting off pressure and finding Guy Hayes in the center of the endzone for the lead. SU led 21-14 with 12:15 remaining.

The Lynx looked to respond but once again it was the Hornets' defense stopping them as Ahvyon Boothe popped a receiver and forced a fumble, which Jamarcus Davis scooped up to place SU in enemy territory.

The short field position helped SU find the endzone again while also chewing the clock, as they handed the ball off to Redfearn four straight times for a total of 24 yards. Redfearn's final run of the drive was a three-yard rush up the middle and across the pylon.
Near the end of the game, Hugney found his number one target, Domenico, for another SU touchdown to put the Hornets up, 35-14. Rhodes added one more touchdown and went for the onsides kick, which Braden Swords recovered to seal the win for SU.

Hugney finished the evening on 14-for-18 passing, 213 yards, three touchdowns, and 14 rushing yards. Domenico had six catches for 103 yards while Redfearn added a total of 88 yards on the ground.

Ahyvyon Boothe led the defense with 11 total tackles with Ethan Brown, Matt Conroy, and Sean Perry all collecting eight. Drew Tyson, Liban Farah, Javonte Dixon, and Brown each had a sack. Conroy joined in with one tackle for loss.

The Shenandoah secondary played a large part as well, breaking up three Lynx passes in the win.
