Football Soars Past Eagles 62-27

SU Tallies 646 Total Yards, Most Since 2019

HUNTINGDON, Pa. - The Shenandoah University football team's offense exploded for 646 total yards, the most in a single game since 2019, in a 62-27 non-conference win at Juniata College on Saturday afternoon.

The Hornets (3-0) trailed the Eagles (1-3) late in the first but used the next 48 minutes to outscore the home team 52-14. SU had four rushers with over 30 yards each while Steven Hugney passed for a career-high five touchdowns and added 328 yards through the air.

RECAP
Jalen Redfearn had the first big play of the day for SU with his 39-yard rush during the team's first drive, setting the Hornets up in the redzone. The Eagles stopped SU on the next three plays leading to a 25-yard field goal by Scott Martin, putting SU up 3-0.

Martin finished the day going 2-2 on field goals and 8-8 on extra points.

After Juniata scored to make it 6-3 in favor of the home team, Steven Hugney helped the Hornets' offense produce a four-play, 75-yard drive to regain the lead. On the drive, Hugney completed passes to Jaden Roberts and Broden Domenico for a total of 15 yards while adding a 14-yard rush. The scoring drive was capped off as Guy Hayes was on the receiving side of a 41-yard completion from Hugney for the score.

A one-yard run put the Eagles in the endzone and in the lead one possession later. Shenandoah started the next drive at its own 26. It only took one play for SU to get to the other side of the field as Hugney found a hole in the defense and rushed for 34 yards, to the Eagles' 40 yardline.

Later in the drive, on a 3rd-and-4, SU handed the ball off to Bryce Buchanan, who broke loose and ran to the endzone for the score. Martin's made point after put SU up 17-13 with 1:36 remaining in the opening quarter.

Corey Kidwell and Devin Keasey forced a sack on a third down to give SU its first defensive stop of the afternoon. The defense came up big again just one drive later as Matt Conroy forced a fumble, with SU jumping on the loose ball.

In the very next play, SU went deep into the playbook and called a play that saw wide receiver Issac Tucker throw the ball 33 yards down the field to fellow receiver Myles Miller. Two plays later, Jalen Redfearn scored a rushing touchdown from 23 yards out.

An incomplete pass on fourth down gave the Hornets the ball right back and Hugney connected with Myles Miller for a 62-yard touchdown, making it a 31-13 ballgame.

Juniata scored with 0:13 left in the half but that left the Hornets with enough time to go down the field and set up Scott Martin for a 40-yard field goal as time expired in the first half. Shenandoah led 34-20 at the break.

The two-score lead didn't last long as Juniata came out of the break and used a one-play, 76-yard drive to bring the game within seven points. That'd be the last time the Eagles would find the score column in the game.

The Hornets' offense continued to soar past the Eagles' defense as both Broden Domenico and Jalen Redfearn added 36- and 40-yard touchdowns, respectively, to put SU back up by multiple scores. On Domenico's scoring drive, punter Cody Crawford kept the drive alive as he rushed for 11 yards on a fourth down conversion.

Juniata attempted a field goal which missed wide right and Shenandoah took advantage of the missed opportunity to once again find the endzone. Aiden McCloskey ran for 21 yards on the drive which put Hugney and the offense in a spot to throw to Issac Tucker for a 26-yard touchdown.

Shenandoah turned to Jack Pearson at quarterback in the fourth quarter and helped orchestrate a touchdown by McCloskey for the final score of the day. Pearson completed one pass for 40 yards in the quarter.

Juniata had the advantage on time of possession throughout the game but Shenandoah out-gained the home team 11.5 to 5.3 on yards per play.

Of the team's 245 rushing yards, Redfearn led the team with 75 while not getting tackled for a negative gain.

Myles Miller was the top receiver for SU with his 101 yards while Roge't Walker had 95 yards on three receptions.

Matt Conroy led the defense with 13 total tackles to go along with the forced fumble and one pass breakup.
