Volleyball Takes Down Bobcats, 3-0, to Split in Tri-Match

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University volleyball team defeated the University of Pittsburgh at Greensburg 3-0 on Saturday afternoon in a tri-match at home. The Hornets (7-8, 0-3 ODAC) took down the Bobcats (1-16) after falling to the No. 23 Washington & Lee Generals (16-0, 6-0) in the first match of the day.

WASHINGTON & LEE RECAP

The Generals won the three sets, 25-21, 25-9, 25-17. The first set saw the two ODAC teams battle back and forth, tying each other eight times and exchanging the lead twice. Shenandoah held an 8-6 lead behind a pair of Amber Shifflett kills, with Vanessa Rodriguez providing the assists. A 5-1 run gave W&L the lead again and held off the Hornets for the rest of the set despite Regan Minney making it 21-23 in the final moments.

The nationally-ranked Generals proved why they are the 23rd-best team in the nation as they overcame an early deficit in the middle set and used a 10-0 run to win the set, 25-9.

In the third set, SU took advantage of back-to-back W&L errors to tie the set at three but the visitors came right back with a 7-0 run to jump out in front 10-3. Regan Minney followed a Hannah Hylton kill with two straight service aces to bring SU back within four. That'd be the closest the Hornets would get to the Generals as W&L ended the match by capitalizing on an SU attack error.

Shenandoah had 30 kills in the match with Hylton leading the way with nine. Minney provided seven kills as Brooke Gast and Shifflett each had four.

Autumn Stroop led the team with 18 digs.

PITT.-GREENSBURG RECAP

Shenandoah flipped the script in the afternoon as they took three sets over the Bobcats, 25-14, 25-16, 25-13.

The opening set had the Bobcats get the first point but the Hornets quickly gained the lead with Regan Minney and Cheyenne Price getting the first kills of the match for SU. Later in the set, Shenandoah opened up its lead even more with an 11-1 run. The run saw kills from four separate SU players. Up 22-14, SU turned to Danica Duncan, who ended the set with two kills including the final point of the frame.

Shenandoah didn't waste time expanding its lead in the second set as they held a 6-0 lead and later an 11-4 lead. For points 10 and 11, Vanessa Rodriguez assisted Ashlyn Wade and Ashlynn Spence who each knocked down the kill. Rodriguez had four more assists in the remaining part of the set, but it was Kylie Danella who got the final asist of the set as she found Ava Pannullo for set point.

Five aces helped Shenandoah get up 14-3 in the final set of the match as Hannah Hylton had two to begin the frame and Minney provided two towards the end of the run. The Bobcats outscored the Hornets for the rest of the set but the SU lead was to much to overcome as Cheyenne Price provided the final point of the afternoon.

12 of the 14 Hornets that played in the match picked up a kill. At the front of the net, Amber Shifflett led the team with one solo block and three block assists. Autumn Stroop, Regan Minney, and Hannah Hylton each ended the match with at least 10 digs.
