Volleyball Sweeps Brooklyn and McDaniel on Day One of Invitational

WINCHESTER, Va. - On day one of the Shenandoah University Volleyball Invitational, Shenandoah walked away with two 3-0 wins over Brooklyn College and McDaniel College. This was the first time since the 2018 season that SU swept two opponents on the same day.

The Hornets (3-3) opened up the invitational with a sweep of the Bulldogs (1-2)  25-13, 25-21, 25-20 before ending the night with a sweep of the Green Terror (2-2) 25-19, 25-18, 25-20.

BROOKLYN RECAP

Hannah Hylton helped the Hornets get out to an early lead with back-to-back aces as Brooke Gast and Ava Pannullo added early kills. A big 7-1 run put SU ahead 11-4 in the first set. Cheyenne Price's two aces and a pair of Bulldog errors put the Hornets up by ten. Shenandoah took home the first-set win on a Hylton ace.

The momentum carried over to the second set as the Hornets jumped out to a 6-0 lead. Kylie Danella helped SU earn half of those points with three aces. Later in the set Danica Duncan, Ashlynn Speence, and Amber Shifflett strung together three consecutive kills after the Bulldogs started to make a comeback.

Brooklyn crawled back into the set, tying it 19-19, but SU went on a 6-2 run to close out the set, 25-21, with Price getting the final kill on a Vanessa Rodriguez assist.

The Bulldogs attempted to avoid the sweep by taking an 11-7 lead in the third set but the Hornets quickly changed the narrative with a 4-1 run to cut their deficit to one. Brooklyn stayed ahead until three errors and two points from Hylton put SU up 18-16.

Kills from Ashlyn Wade and Shifflett, mixed in with two Bulldog errors put the dagger in the match, as SU went on to take the set, 25-20.

Shifflett and Spence led the team with six kills each as Danella and Rodriguez tallied double-digit assists. Libero, Autumn Stroop had a team-high 10 digs.

McDANIEL RECAP

Shenandoah took advantage of a tired McDaniel squad early in the match, as the Green Terror was coming directly off of a five-set battle with Penn State Altoona in the match prior. The Hornets rallied out to a 10-5 lead after an 8-0 run. During the SU run, McDaniel had six errors as a team.

Kylie Danella earned her second kill of the set to put SU up 11-7 and three more Green Terror errors extended the Hornets lead. Errors continued to be the story of the first set as SU went on to win, 25-19.

The teams traded points for the first half of the middle frame but a Hannah Hylton ace and Regan Minney kill put SU ahead 14-13 and they'd hold the lead for the remainder of the frame. A kill by Cheyenne Price kill capped off a 6-0 run for SU and extended the lead to 20-14. The Hornets took the set 25-18.

In the final set of the evening, the Green Terror didn't let the Hornets gain control of the lead until an attack error made it 16-15 in favor of the home squad. Regan Minney immediately gained an ace to put SU up by two.

McDaniel remained close but could never get the lead back in big part to a kill from Ava Panullo and the point from Hannah Hylton which ended the match.

Six Hornets racked up kills in the match with Hylton leading the way. Panullo led the team in blocks with two solo and two assists. Danella set up the team well with her 17 assists.
