Shenandoah Falls on the Road to Averett, 85-60

DANVILLE, Va. – The Shenandoah University men's basketball team took its first road trip in nearly a month, falling 85–60 to Averett University in ODAC play on Wednesday night.

The Cougars (7–8, 2–4 ODAC) built a 19-point halftime lead over the Hornets (6–10, 1–6 ODAC) and maintained control throughout the second half to secure the victory.

RECAP
Guards Joshua Stephen and Shamir Taylor opened the game with aggressive drives to the basket, scoring on back-to-back possessions to force two early ties at 2-2 and 4-4. However, Averett responded with a 12–2 scoring run, capitalizing on five consecutive successful possessions, including two second-chance baskets, to jump out to a double-digit lead.

A free throw by Dorian Davis and a two-handed slam by John Allen briefly cut the deficit to nine, but the Cougars' offensive pressure extended their lead. Averett maintained defensive intensity and expanded its advantage to 19 points just 10 minutes into the first half.

Late in the half, Landon Russ connected on a jumper, followed by free throws from Taylor and Stephen, trimming the halftime deficit to 19.

Tye Thompson, playing in his first game for Shenandoah, contributed four points and four rebounds in the opening half. He continued his impact in the second period, scoring early and finishing as the team's second-leading scorer with 11 points.

Averett surged back ahead by over 20 points early in the second half. Davis briefly cut the lead back to 19 after picking up a steal and scoring on a fast-break layup, but the Cougars immediately responded with a three-pointer to extend their advantage once again.

The teams traded baskets for the remainder of the contest, with Averett outscoring Shenandoah 21–18 over the final 11 minutes of play.

Davis led SU with a team-high 12 points and two steals, while Kendrick Robinson led the team in rebounds with five. Shenandoah forced 10 turnovers on the defensive end.
