Women's Volleyball Battles in Four Set Loss to UMW

FREDERICKSBURG, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team lost 3-1 on Saturday afternoon in non-conference action at the University of Mary Washington.

The Horents (8-7) avoided the sweep with a close 26-24 victory in the third, but the Eagles (6-17) wrapped up the match with a 25-23 victory in the fourth.

Three service aces by Vanessa Rodriguez put the Hornets up 8-5 in the first. The Eagles went on to lead 16-13, but a block by Chillis Oke and Ashlynn Spence tied the set at 16. However, the Eagles regained the lead and won the set 25-23, despite Kali Highlander and Hannah Hylton kills bringing the Hornets within one, 24-23.

UMW scored the first seven points of the second set, but the Hornets came back to tie the set at 15 off two bad sets by the home team. The teams traded points for a 19-19 tie. The Eagles ended the second set on a 6-2 run, winning 25-21.

Trailing 13-10 in the third, Shenandoah answered with a 3-0 run, capped off by a solo block from Spence. Mary Washington came right back with a 4-0 run of its own, but the Hornets eventually gained the lead, 23-22. Down to their final point of the afternoon, Shenandoah claimed the third set on another 3-0 run, powered by an Amber Shifflett solo block.

In the fourth, Shenandoah led as much as five, but the Eagles eventually came back and led 15-14. Shenandoah tied the set at 15 and 22, but UMW held on for the 25-23 victory.

The Hornets had 11 aces as a team, with Spence leading the way with four. Hylton led the team with 19 kills, while Amanda Ingrassia matched that number in assists.

UP NEXT

Shenandoah hosts Averett this Friday at 7 p.m. in an ODAC match. The Hornets are searching for their first win over the Cougars since 2015.
