Hornets Complete Reverse Sweep Over Cougars

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team pulled off a thrilling reverse sweep over Averett University on Friday night, earning a 3-2 ODAC victory at home.

The Hornets (9-7, 5-2 ODAC) dropped the first two sets by identical 27-25 scores before storming back to take the next three, 25-21, 25-16, and 15-9, over the Cougars (4-15, 1-8).

Shenandoah set multiple program records (since 2009) in the win, including single-match highs in kills (72), assists (67), and points (87). The victory also marked the team's first reverse sweep since 2018 against Emory & Henry.

RECAP

Trailing 5-2 in the first set, the Hornets went on a 7-0 run to claim a 9-5 lead, with multiple kills from Alana Washington and Ashlynn Spence. Shenandoah went on to lead 24-22, but the Cougars came back to tie the frame before winning 27-25.

In the second set, Averett used an 8-0 run to take a 12-6 advantage, with SU coming back late to tie the set at 19. Kamryn Keasey had back-to-back kills to once again push the Hornets in front, 24-22, but the Cougars repeated their first set, winning 27-25.

The Hornets trailed 10-5 in the third and later saw a 20-18 deficit. The Hornets used three kills from Spence and an ace by Samantha Shy to clinch the lead, 24-20. After a Hornets service error, they earned their first set win of the evening behind a kill from Hannah Hylton, assisted by Autumn Stroop.

In the fourth set, tied at 12, Shenandoah went on a 6-0 run, bookended by kills from Hylton. The team traded the next handful of points, prior to Shenandoah having set point, thanks to an ace by Stroop. The Hornets were able to force a fifth set off a kill from Spence, with Amanda Ingrassia providing the assist.

In the decisive fifth set, the Cougars jumped out to a 5-1 lead, but the Hornets quickly responded, tying the set at five. Averett then came right back with a 4-1 run of its own, to lead 9-6. Shenandoah rallied back, taking the final nine points of the set, with five team kills, and Spence providing the game-winning point.

Vanessa Rodriguez and Ingrassia tied for the team-high in assists with 27, while Washington, Spence, and Hylton each had at least 14 kills. Defensively, Stroop led the way with 28 digs.

Shenandoah is back in action tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m. for an ODAC home match against Guilford College.
