Football Takes Inaugural Matchup with Roanoke

SALEM, Va. - In the first-ever meeting between the programs, the Shenandoah University football team defeated Roanoke College, 33-20, on the road on Saturday in an ODAC game.

Following a 13-13 tie in the third quarter, the Hornets (5-1, 3-1 ODAC) outscored the Maroons (4-2, 2-2) 20-7 for the remainder of the game, including an 80-yard pick-six to seal the win.

RECAP

Following an opening drive interception by the Maroons, the Hornets' defense forced a three-and-out, giving the ball back to the offense. Mekhi Brown and Roge't Walker connected on back-to-back passes for a total of 29 yards, helping set up a 10-yard completion to Connor Bartlett for the game's opening touchdown.

Roanoke responded with a field goal, with the Hornets leading 7-3 at the end of the first. Shenandoah came back with a 13-play, 75-yard touchdown drive, with TJ Henderson making a four-yard catch in the endzone for the score. However, the Hornets missed the extra point, allowing the Maroons to score 10 unanswered points to tie the game in the early going of the third.

Tied at 13, Shenandoah fumbled the ball, allowing Roanoke a chance to get the lead for the first time. On the ensuing drive for the Maroons, and just outside the red zone, Ryan Apietu forced a strip sack, recovering the fumble for SU.

Shenandoah drove down the field behind three completions by Brown for 10 or more yards, including a 16-yard pass to Jackson McFarland to push the Hornets in front, 20-13.

Brown and McFarland connected again on the second play of the fourth, this time for a 55-yard score, which gave the Hornets a 13-point lead, following a blocked extra point attempt. The Maroons cut their deficit down to one score on the next drive, as SU led 26-20 with 9:50 remaining.

Shenandoah nearly extended the lead again but fumbled the ball out of the end zone, forcing a touchback and giving the ball back to the Maroons. The Hornets' defense came up big on the next drive with an 80-yard pick-six by Jaren Mitchell. The touchdown gave Shenandoah a 13-point lead with 2:32 left.

The Hornets officially sealed the win as Sean Perry stopped the Maroons at the SU one-yard line on a fourth-down run, with just over 90 seconds left.

Mekhi Brown finished the afternoon with 19 completions for 264 yards and four touchdowns. McFarland was Brown's favorite target, catching five passes for 93 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Aidan McCloskey led SU with 81 rushing yards, on 9.1 yards per carry.

Apietu, Matt Conroy, and Ace Heinrichs each had 11 total tackles for the team high. The defense had six tackles for loss, including two sacks.
