Women's Volleyball Splits at Lancaster Bible

LANCASTER, Pa. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team split in a tri-match on Saturday afternoon, defeating St. Mary's College (Md.) before falling to the home team Lancaster Bible College.

The Hornets (11-10) opened their day against the Seahawks (14-14) and took the match in five sets, before being swept by the Chargers (16-11).

ST. MARY'S COLLEGE (Md.) RECAP

The Seahawks took a back-and-forth first set, 25-18, after ending the frame on a 7-2 run. Shenandoah began the second set with a 3-0 run, but St. Mary's ended up with a 7-6 lead. However, two kills by the Hornets gave them a 10-7 lead.

Consecutive aces by Hannah Hylton helped the Hornets to a 19-12 lead late in the frame, with Shenandoah winning the second, 25-19, off a set error by the Seahawks. Trailing 11-8 in the third, the Hornets flipped the script with a 7-0 run behind three kills and an ace by Amanda Ingrassia. Shenandoah led late, 23-17, with a kill by Chillis Oke, before winning the set, 25-19, off an Ashlynn Spence kill.

St. Mary's evened the match at two with a 25-21 win in the fourth, after the Hornets led 18-13.

The Seahawks took a 5-3 lead in the final set, but an Oke kill ignited a 5-0 run for the Hornets, giving them an 8-5 advantage. St. Mary's brought its deficit down to two, 12-10, but the Hornets were able to keep the lead and win 15-10.

Hylton led Shenandoah with 15 kills, with Vanessa Rodriguez providing 23 assists.

LANCASTER BIBLE RECAP

The Chargers opened the match on a 5-0 run and later led 8-4. The Hornets came within one, 8-7, with a Kiyah Robinson kill, but the Chargers stayed in the lead to hold a 20-12 lead. Vanessa Rodriguez had a service ace to cut the deficit down to four, but the home team won the set, 25-17, with a 4-0 run.

Lancaster Bible scored the first point of the second set and used the momentum to lead 19-10. Shenandoah began to rally back, cutting the deficit down to three at 23-20, off a Hylton block. However, the Chargers ended the set, winning 25-21.

After scoring first in the third, Shenandoah led 4-3, but a 10-3 run by Lancaster Bible gave them a 13-7 lead. The hosts continued to stay in front, winning 25-18, to complete the sweep.

Shenandoah is at Eastern Mennonite University this Wednesday for a midweek ODAC contest.
