Football Celebrates Senior Day with 17-14 Win over Generals

WINCHESTER, Va. - For the second straight year, the Shenandoah University football team is bowl-bound following a 17-14 win at home over Washington and Lee University on Saturday afternoon in an ODAC game.

The Hornets (8-2, 6-2 ODAC) took a three-point lead with a 31-yard field goal by Carson Gallant with 1:44 left. The Generals (6-4, 6-2) traveled down the field and had a 25-yard field goal attempt to tie the game, but missed the kick to give SU the win on senior day.

RECAP

Roge't Walker returned the opening kickoff to midfield, setting the Hornets up in prime position for the first drive. Shenandoah ran the ball 10 times on its first drive, ending in a one-yard rushing touchdown by Jalen Redfearn, putting SU up 7-0.

Each team had to punt in the first quarter, leading to the Generals having possession at the end of the first. The visitors drove down the field at the start of the second and faced a 4th-and-1 from the SU three. The Generals went for the first down, but Phoenix Andes-Stowell came up with the stop, giving the ball back to the Hornets.

On the ensuing drive, it looked like the Hornets were lining up to punt, but they ran a fake with lineman Andy Anderson, who ran up the middle for an eight-yard gain. However, the Generals stood tall and forced a punt just a few plays later. Looking to tie the game late in the second, the Generals went for another fourth-down conversion but threw an incomplete pass, keeping the lead at 7-0 for SU at halftime.

Washington and Lee scored a touchdown on its first drive of the second half, tying the game at seven. The Generals then stopped the Hornets on consecutive drives, allowing the visitors to score at the start of the fourth for a 14-7 lead.

Following the Washington and Lee touchdown, Shenandoah got the ball at its own 25. Back-to-back completions to Caleb Weston, for 25 total yards, helped keep the drive alive following an SU holding penalty. Then just three plays later, Redfearn found the endzone again, tying the game at 14.

The Shenandoah defense forced a quick three-and-out, giving the ball right back to the Hornets' offense. A 12-yard run by Aidan McCloskey, along with an unsportsmanlike penalty by WLU, helped push the Hornets into Generals' territory. McCloskey ran the ball six more times on the drive, chewing the clock and setting up the go-ahead field goal by Gallant.

Washington and Lee went down the field on the next drive and ran 15 plays in roughly 80 seconds, setting up their game-tying field goal attempt. The Hornets called a timeout, trying to ice the kicker, and on the attempt, the Generals kicked a linedrive that went low and missed the target, giving SU the two-seed in the ODAC standings.

Redfearn finished the day with 29 rushing attempts for 117 yards and two touchdowns, while adding two catches for 34 yards.

Mekhi Brown passed for 128 yards on 14 completions, with 10 rushing yards.

Matt Conroy led the team with 13 total tackles, while Jaren Mitchell had the lone tackle for loss on the day.

The Hornets have eight wins now this season, marking the third time in four years they've hit the mark.

Shenandoah is one of two ODAC representatives Chesapeake Challenge and will play in one of two bowl games next Saturday. The Hornets' opponent and location of the game will be officially announced by the Landmark and ODAC conferences on Sunday evening, following the NCAA Selection Show at 5 p.m.
