Men's Basketball Holds Off Chargers for Sixth Straight Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team continued its season-opening win streak on Tuesday evening with an 80-74 win over Lancaster Bible College at home.

The Hornets (6-0) led by as much as 19, but the Chargers (4-1) cut their deficit down to five with nearly five minutes remaining. Consecutive baskets by Joseph Baldwin, including a breakaway dunk, helped get the lead up to nine with a minute remaining to secure the win.

RECAP

Lancaster Bible got out to a quick start with a steal that put them up 4-0 just 40 seconds into the game. Joseph Baldwin tied the game up for the Hornets while Ellis Wright added a pair of free throws to give Shenandoah the lead, 6-4.

The Chargers quickly tied the contest back up, but the Hornets grabbed the lead for good off a three-pointer from Dorian Davis. Minutes later, Davis hit another three and added a mid-range jumper for the home team, putting them up by 12, 20-8.

With roughly 10 minutes left in the opening half, Isaiah Lee found Davis for his third three-pointer of the night. At the other end of the floor, Davis earned one of his four steals and transitioned the ball to Wright, who nailed a shot from downtown to give the Hornets a 16-point cushion.

The Chargers got the deficit back down to 10, but the Hornets went on a 15-6 run to get the lead up to 19. The lead got cut to 13 after only making one field goal in the final 3:30 of the half, but a pair of free throws from Seth Sanusi gave the Hornets a 49-34 lead heading into halftime.

The Hornets were held without a point for the first 5:25 of the second half, which allowed the Chargers to get their deficit to nine. The Hornets' lead continued to be trimmed with the Chargers only trailing by five with 5:19 left.

Davis hit another three to get the lead to eight, but SU was held with a basket for the next three minutes, which let LBC get the deficit back to five. The Hornets were finally able to put the game away with a layup from Baldwin and a dunk by the big man the next time down the court. Davis and Landon Russ closed out the game for SU with two free throws each.

Davis finished his night with 22 points, nine rebounds, four steals, three assists, and two blocks.

Matthew Simmons dished out a team-high eight assists in the win, while Baldwin, Wright, Russ, and Sanusi each scored at least 10.
