Women's Basketball's Comeback Falls Short in First Loss of the Season

WINCHESTER, Va. - The (RV) Shenandoah University women's basketball team lost its first game of the season on Sunday afternoon in a 64-49 loss to (RV) Christopher Newport University at home.

The Hornets (5-1), who trailed by 15 at halftime, made it a one-possession game off a three from Addisyn Banks with 6:10 remaining in the fourth. However, the Captains (6-2) finished the game on a 16-4 run, holding SU to one basket in the final minutes.

RECAP

Emily Williams scored the first four points for the Hornets, giving them an early lead. CNU then went on a 12-0 run to take a 15-4 lead with 5:41 remaining in the first. Jessica Littlejohn and Williams hit back-to-back layups to cut the Hornets' deficit down to seven heading into the media timeout.

Following the timeout, SU's defense didn't allow a field goal for the rest of the quarter, but four free throws from CNU helped them take a 19-10 lead into the second.

Two baskets by Brynna Nesselrodt and a three by Taylor Moran helped the Hornets come within four points, but consecutive threes by the visitors had them up by 10 at the halfway point of the quarter. Banks scored the final four points of the half for SU as the Captains ended the quarter on a 13-4 run.

Shenandoah started the second half with a pair of layups assisted by Williams, holding CNU scoreless for the first two minutes. CNU only made two field goals in the third quarter, but both were threes, helping them keep a 10-point lead entering the fourth quarter.

The Hornets' defense forced four missed shots and three turnovers in the first four minutes of the fourth, helping them go on a 9-2 run. Banks scored seven of the nine points during the run, including a three to make it a three-point game, which forced the Captains to call a timeout.

CNU responded right away and regained a double-digit lead thanks to an 8-0 run, with them eventually taking a 15-point lead to finish the game.

Williams highlighted the day for SU with a 14-point, 14-rebound double-double, while also having four assists. Banks led the team in scoring with 18 points while providing four steals and two blocks at the defensive end of the court.
