Williams' Last-Second Shot Sinks Marlins

Women's Basketball Wins, 62-61

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - A last-second shot gave the (RV) Shenandoah University women's basketball team a 62-61 win at Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday night in the first conference game of the season.

Trailing by one with just seconds remaining, Emily Williams hit a layup to give the Hornets (6-1, 1-0 ODAC) a lead with the Marlins (4-2, 0-1) missing a half-court heave at the buzzer to give SU the win.

RECAP

Shenandoah's leading scorers, Emily Williams and Addisyn Banks, put them up 9-3 in the first quarter. SU's defense held VWU to one basket in the first five and a half minutes of the contest. However, the Marlins figured it out on the offensive half of the court and outscored the Hornets 8-4 to only trail by two at the end of the first.

Virginia Wesleyan carried its momentum over to the second and gained a six-point advantage less than three minutes into the frame. A three by Banks cut the deficit in half for SU, but the Marlins continued their push to hold a 26-19 lead.

Anaya Wilson and Jessica Littlejohn scored to get the Hornets back within three, and Littlejohn converted a free throw with 1:10 to go in the second quarter to tie the game at 28. Brynna Nesselrodt made a fastbreak layup and knocked down a three following a steal by Banks to give SU a 33-28 lead at halftime.

In the third, the Marlins went on an 11-4 run that put the lead back in their favor before Skai Bayless answered for the Hornets, tying the game at 39. Then, Nesselrodt made another three-pointer to put SU up by three. However, in the final 4:15 of the third, the Marlins put together another run that gave them a 48-44 lead heading into the final quarter.

The home team led for the majority of the fourth, until a Nesselrodt layup gave SU a one-point lead with 2:21 remaining. Nesselrodt quickly forced a steal, which transitioned into a layup by Williams, off an assist from Banks.

Bayless made sure the Hornets still led by at least three, hitting a layup with 44 seconds left after the Marlins scored a layup of their own. An offensive rebound by Virginia Wesleyan led to them making a corner three to tie the game at 59 with under 20 seconds to play.

The Hornets gave the ball to Williams, who drove into the paint and drew a foul to get sent to the charity stripe. The senior made one of the shots, giving SU a lead. However, the Marlins made a basket with less than five seconds to go to get the lead in their favor.

The late basket by Virginia Wesleyan led to Shenandoah calling a timeout and getting in an inbound pass in the front court. Bayless took the inbound and connected with Williams for the last-second, game-winning layup for Shenandoah.

Williams finished the night with 17 points and made over 50 percent of her shots. Banks played 38 minutes and recorded an 18-point, 10-rebound double-double.
