Men's Basketball Wins Season Opener

Hornets Drop 67 Points, Led by Wright's 25

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's basketball team began its 2025-26 season with a 67-58 win at home over Mary Baldwin University on Friday night in a non-conference game.

The Hornets (1-0) trailed by two at halftime against the Fighting Squirrels (0-1), but opened up the second half on an 8-0 run, securing the lead for good. Ellis Wright dropped a career-high 25 points, with Dorian Davis adding an additional 20 points for the Hornets.

The Fighting Squirrels opened the game with a three, but Dorian Davis answered for the Hornets with a bucket in the paint for their first points of the season. A 6-0 run for the Hornets, with four points from Ellis Wright, helped them take their first lead of the year, 8-7.

Shenandoah led by as much as three in the first half, but it was the Fighting Squirrels holding an eight-point lead with 7:12 remaining in the first. Shenandoah chipped away at its deficit and only trailed by two at the end of the half, thanks to free throws by Davis with under 30 seconds left.

Shenandoah opened the second with eight straight points in the first two minutes, gaining a six-point lead. A layup by Matthew Simmons gave SU a double-digit lead, 41-31, with 16:13 left. Just a minute later, Joseph Baldwin nailed a jumper for a 12-point lead, with Jaylen Lemon extending the lead after an MBU bucket.

The Fighting Squirrels fought back, pulling within four with just under three minutes left. However, John Allen, Davis, and Wright scored to push the lead to nine, with the Hornets hanging on for the 67-58 win.

Baldwin led the team with eight rebounds, with Davis right behind with seven. Baldwin had the lone assist of the night for the Hornets.

Shenandoah finished the game shooting 46.2 percent, helped out by a 62.5 percent in the second half.

Shenandoah hosts Wilson College next Saturday at 6 p.m. in a non-conference game.
