Women's Volleyball Wins Five Set Thriller on Senior Day

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team ended its regular season with a thrilling five-set win over Messiah University on Saturday at home for Senior Day.

The Hornets (13-10) won sets two and three, before downing the Falcons (16-12) 16-14 in the fifth set to claim the non-conference win.

RECAP

Shenandoah earned the first point of the afternoon, thanks to a service ace from senior Zandria Burton. Amanda Ingrassia gained two more aces for SU, giving them a 6-2 lead, which then grew to 10-4 thanks to an Ava Pannullo kill. However, a 12-1 run by the Falcons helped them win set one, 25-16.

Shenandoah opened the second with six straight points, including consecutive kills from Alana Washington. The six-point lead was cut down as Messiah was able to tie the frame, 17-17. The teams rallied back and forth until kills from Pannullo and Hannah Hylton gave SU a 25-22 win.

The third frame proved to be closer than the first two, with each team controlling the lead. Messiah led late, 23-21, but a 3-0 run by SU pushed them in front by one. Messiah responded with consecutive points for a potential set-point. However, it was the Hornets winning the set and going up 2-1 in the match, winning 27-25.

Messiah tied the match at two, winning the fourth set by seven after the teams were tied at 15.

The Falcons began the final set with three straight points, but a kill by Danica Duncan and blocks by Pannullo and Duncan gave Shenandoah a 4-3 advantage. Messiah answered quickly, which helped them lead 14-12, on the brink of winning the match. Yet, Shenandoah didn't back down and won the match with a 4-0 run, capped by an Autumn Stroop ace.

Hylton and Washington each had double-digit kills. Ingrassia had 23 assists, with Kylie Danella adding 16.
