Catholic Defeats Men's Soccer in Season Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University men's soccer team fell 1-0 in its 2025 season opener at home on Friday night in a non-conference match against Catholic University of America.

A turnover in the defensive half of the field by the Hornets (0-1) led directly to the Cardinals' (1-0) goal in the first half, for the contest's only score.

IN BRIEF

Sophomore goalie Talan Josaitis made the first key play of the game, stopping Catholic's first shot in the eighth minute of play. Nearly 30 minutes later, the Cardinals gained the game's next shot, missing over the net.

The missed shot led to a goal kick for Shenandoah, which was misplayed in the Hornets' defensive third and ended up on the foot of an attacking Cardinal. The Cardinals' attacker made the most of his chance and buried the game's only goal in the bottom right corner of the cage in the 38th minute.

Shenandoah ended the first half with a shot by Bruce Gonzales for the team's only shot of the opening 45 minutes.

In the middle of the second half, Shenandoah earned two great scoring chances from Zach Robinson. Robinson's first chance came in the 70th minute as he fired a shot towards the bottom corner, which was saved. Nearly two minutes later, Robinson received a beautiful cross and shot the ball, which deflected off the top post, keeping the game 1-0.

Josaitis made five saves in the second half to keep the Hornets within striking distance. The Hornets had two shots in the game's final 10 minutes but Catholic's defense stayed on SU to give them the opening day shutout.

First-year Dylan Johnson and junior Hatim Elkhasouani played all 90 minutes for Shenandoah.
