Women's Volleyball Swept by No. 23 VWU in Home Opener

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team opened its ODAC and home schedule with a 3-0 loss to No. 23 Virginia Wesleyan University on Wednesday evening.

The Marlins (12-0, 1-0 ODAC) won the first two sets 25-18 before completing the sweep with a 25-17 third set victory over the Hornets (3-5, 0-1 ODAC).

IN BRIEF

Kills from Ava Pannullo and Amber Shifflett assisted the Hornets in taking a 4-1 lead early in the first. Ashlynn Spence and Alana Washington helped the lead grow to four, but the Marlins went on a 12-2 run to capture an 18-10 advantage. Three Marlins errors brought SU back within three, but VWU capitalized on a 5-1 run to take the set.

Virginia Wesleyan controlled the lead early in the second until a service ace by Spence gave SU an 8-7 lead, its only of the frame. With the Marlins back in front, Susan Smith set up Pannullo for a kill that kept the Hornets within one; however, VWU would win the set by seven points.

Shifflett gave Shenandoah another early lead in the third but the Marlins gained the lead quickly and went ahead by 10. The Hornets started to fight back with a 4-0 run, capped by blocks from Shifflett and Pannullo, but the lead was too much to overcome as the Marlins completed the sweep.

Amanda Ingrassia led the way in assists for SU with 17, as Pannullo completed a team-high seven kills. Libero Autumn Stroop had 17 digs on the defensive side of the court.
