Women's Volleyball Defeats Roanoke for First Time Since 2017

WINCHESTER, Va. - The Shenandoah University women's volleyball team defeated Roanoke College for the first time since 2017 in a sweep at home in ODAC play on Friday night.

The Hornets (4-5, 1-1 ODAC) led the way in the first and third set, allowing zero lead changes, as the Maroons (6-7, 1-2) only held the lead in the middle set.

RECAP

Three attack errors and a kill from Alana Washington helped the Hornets gain a 4-1 lead in the first set. Roanoke came right back to tie the set at four, but SU broke the tie and controlled the rest of the frame.

Shenandoah held seven-point leads five times in the opening set, winning 25-18 off a kill from Amber Shifflett, assisted by Amanda Ingrassia.

The Maroons looked to even the match in the second set, but the Hornets stayed close, forcing a tie six times. Kills by Hannah Hylton and Shifflett propelled a 7-1 run for Shenandoah, which saw the home team hold its first lead of the frame.

Autumn Stroop provided a service ace for the Hornets, giving them a 16-12 lead. The lead grew to six, the largest of the set for the Hornets. The hosts had four more kills during the closing portion of the second, giving them a 25-20 victory and a 2-0 match lead.

Shenandoah's offense exploded in the third set and took a 10-3 lead behind five kills and a service ace by Stroop. Washington and Chillis Oke provided a block on the defensive end during the early run.

The lead stayed around seven points until Kylie Danella provided another service ace for the Hornets, which put them up by double digits for the first time in the match. Shenandoah ended the match in electric fashion thanks to two service aces by Samantha Shy and kills from Hylton and Kamryn Keasey.

Ingrassia and Vanessa Rodriguez acquired double-digit assists to lead the Hornets, while Hylton and Washington benefited the most from the assists with nine kills each.
