Hornets Win Third Straight ODAC Match, First Time Since 2017

WINCHESTER, Va. - For the first time in program history, the Shenandoah University women's volleyball team defeated Randolph-Macon College, 3-1, at home on Wednesday night in an ODAC match.

Ashylnn Spence led the Hornets (6-5, 3-1 ODAC) with 18.0 points, collecting 11 kills, four solo blocks, four block assists, and a service ace in the win over the Yellow Jackets (8-3, 3-1). Hannah Hylton and Alana Washington joined Spence with double-digit kills in the four-set match.

RECAP

With the Yellow Jackets up 12-10 in the first set, SU went on a 7-0 run with Spence bringing the James R. Wilkins, Jr. Athletics and Events Center alive with five straight points, with back-to-back solo blocks and three straight kills.

Amber Shifflett and Washington kept the party going with kills of their own to push the Hornets in front by seven, 21-14. RMC came within four of the Hornets, but a service error and a kill from Hylton helped the Hornets take the opening set, 25-19.

In the second set, Shenandoah gained an early 4-3 lead off multiple attack errors from the visitors. Two more RMC errors and a kill by Washington assisted the Hornets in taking a 7-4 advantage. However, Randolph-Macon claimed the lead and led 22-18 late in the second.

Amanda Ingrassia assisted on consecutive kills by Shifflett and Washington on a 3-0 run for SU, which saw their deficit shrink to one. Leading 22-21, the Yellow Jackets finished the second set on a 3-1 run, winning 25-22, tying the match at one.

Randolph-Macon looked to win the third set with an early two-point lead, 7-5. However, Chillis Oke and Spence teamed up for a block that started a 5-0 run for Shenandoah, giving the home team a three-point lead.

The lead went right back into the hands of the Yellow Jackets, 20-15, but the Hornets flew back to tie the set off an error from Randolph-Macon. The teams continued to fight back-and-forth for a 23-23 tie. The Hornets gained set point off another solo block from Spence, before winning the set, 25-23, with a kill from Hylton.

Leading the match 2-1, and momentum on their side, the Hornets rallied for an 8-2 lead in the fourth, thanks to four blocks by SU. Vanessa Rodriguez assisted on three kills, and Samantha Shy added a service ace to push the lead to seven for SU, 13-6.

Shenandoah's lead grew to nine, but Randolph-Macon stayed in the match with a 7-1 run to come within three at 19-16. The Hornets saw themselves close to victory, up 23-20, following a 4-0 run from each team. The Hornets ended the set and pulled off the upset victory thanks to another kill from Spence and an error from the Yellow Jackets.

Ingrassia had 25 assists in the match for her fourth game this season with at least 20 assists. Rodriguez added 19 assists for SU, which is the second most in a single match for the sophomore this season.

Spence's four solo blocks were the most for a Hornet since 2019. Autumn Stroop led the team with 23 digs, while Hylton added 14.

This is the first time since 2017 that the Hornets have won three straight ODAC matches.
