Women's Soccer Ties Stevenson, 1-1, with Late First-Half Equalizer

WINCHESTER, Va. – The Shenandoah University women's soccer team tied Stevenson University, 1-1, on Wednesday night in non-conference action in its first home match of the 2025 season.

The Hornets (0-1-1) equalized late in the first half off a corner kick but missed two golden chances at the end of each half, settling for the draw against the Mustangs (1-0-1).

RECAP

Less than two minutes into the game, a misplayed header by SU led to a Stevenson breakaway, resulting in the Mustangs' lone shot on goal and score of the night.

Shenandoah responded with heavy pressure, as Kaitlyn Wahl, Lucy Greenstein, and McKenna Newcome all forced saves in the next 10 minutes. Over the next half hour, the Hornets fired six more shots on target, but each was stopped by the Stevenson goalkeeper.

In the 45th minute, Shenandoah finally broke through. Off a corner from Peyton Lubinsky, Addison Campbell scored her first career goal, tying the match at 1-1. Just seconds before halftime, Newcome nearly put the Hornets ahead, but her attempt was once again denied.

The second half was much the same, with the Hornets controlling possession and generating chance after chance. The Mustangs made seven more saves in the period, including two cleared off the goal line.

The Hornets had their best opportunity in the 89th minute after earning a penalty kick. The ensuing shot hit the crossbar, allowing Stevenson to escape with the tie.

Shenandoah outshot Stevenson 34-4, including a 19-1 margin in shots on goal. The Mustangs' keeper finished with 16 saves.
